to consider selling SIL's expensive bag?

So three years ago my SIL gave me an old bag of hers. It is a Falabella bag by Stella McCartney in medium size. I guess the bag was already a couple of years old when SIL gave it to me.

She did not specify whether it was a present or she was just lending it to me, but she hasn't mentioned the bag ever since. She has dozens of fantastic bags and shops very often, so I guess she simply forgot. Knowing her I also think she gave me that bag because she did not like it anymore as she is not exactly an altruistic person.

I don't really like this bag, I almost never used it and I am considering to sell it on Ebay. Since it is a designer bag it should still be worth quite a bit I think.

However I am terrified she may one day asks me about the bag, even though I think it is unlikely. I would be really embarassed to admit I sold it. At the same time it feels like a shame to have such a valuable bag sitting in a closet and never being used.

What would you do? Am I a really ungrateful bitch for thinking to sell it? Please go easy on me grin

It is horrible grin

Why don't you just ask her if she minds?

That's a rather specific description OP. Advertising for any takers?

It's hideous.

Throw it away. Don't inflict other people's eyes upon it.

Is this a serious question?

Uhm no queen, I don't think that bag should be too hard to sell on an appropriate platform.

The pic I attached is just a sample to show what I am talking about, it is not the actual bag. I am definitely not trying to sell it on mumsnet!

Not surprised she gave it away !!'

It's revolting. But it's £700 new. Sell it!

AyeAmarok Tue 12-Jul-16 19:55:36

Eh, ask her first? confused

MyAmDeryCross Tue 12-Jul-16 19:56:06

Tell her it was stolen.

If she buys it from you on eBay this will not work (! shock)

I'm ysure she wouldn't ask but if she does say something vague, buy a revolting handbag, give it to her and cross examine her every time you see her with a different bag.

ilovesooty Tue 12-Jul-16 19:56:45

You can't sell something that's not your property.

Ondasp Tue 12-Jul-16 19:57:08

That's the problem, I can't ask her. SIL and I aren't close and our relationship is very formal. I think she would get really offended if I asked her.

So please assume I can't ask her directly.

LadyMonicaBaddingham Tue 12-Jul-16 20:00:12

Then please assume that you shouldn't be selling it.

TheUnsullied Tue 12-Jul-16 20:00:54

OK, under what circumstances did it come to you? If she passed it to you for you to use for a specific occasion, you've borrowed it. If she's just kind of turned up with it and gave it to you, it's yours and you can sell it.

TheCraicDealer Tue 12-Jul-16 20:01:56

I don't think you'd get that much for it to be honest, certainly not enough to make the inevitable embarrassment worthwhile when she asks why she hasn't seen you use it in a while.

kimlo Tue 12-Jul-16 20:02:44

Why would she lend you a bag that you dont like, didnt ask for and then not mention it again for years?

She gave it to you.

Sell it and if she asks tell her you will look for it, but you have no idea where it is.

jobrum Tue 12-Jul-16 20:02:55

You could tell her a friend really liked it and as you hadn't used it much, gave it away. Then you won't have to admit to the profit!

Snowflakes1122 Tue 12-Jul-16 20:03:11

Hmm. Could be awkward in future if she asks you about it.

You're not sure if she have it you to keep or borrow, so unless your short of cash I would hold on to it.

Snowflakes1122 Tue 12-Jul-16 20:03:31

Gave not have!

Dutchcourage Tue 12-Jul-16 20:03:47

Ask her.

Because the second you sell it she will text asking you if you still have that Stella bag she left there...

Bottomchops Tue 12-Jul-16 20:03:52

Oh bollocks; just sell it! If she ever asks say you can't find it.

AppleMagic Tue 12-Jul-16 20:04:00

Tell her you no longer want it and ask what she would prefer you to do with it (give it back/sell it etc).

Floralnomad Tue 12-Jul-16 20:08:28

Why can't you just say to SIL that you found the bag at the back of your wardrobe and does she want it back , she will either say yes or no - no embarrassment involved and if she doesn't want it back then you can do what you want with it .
