AIBU?

To want to extend a house straight after moving?

So we are moving house to gain more space for our family. DH and I had different favourite options but I agreed that the option he prefers is in a better location for the children in particular (nice quiet cul De sac) than my preference. It's also significantly cheaper than my choice. Main drawback in my book is the kitchen, but the house has plenty of space to extend and at least double the kitchen size. The house already has the garage and driveway etc. that he wanted. DH is now saying that he wouldn't want to think about extending the house for at least a couple of years after we move as he thinks moving is disruptive enough as it is and he wouldn't want to disrupt the children (and himself) again straight away. We could have the cash from the equity on the house we are selling to do the extension straight after our move. AIBU to want this and not live with a rubbish kitchen for a couple of years? (By the way I do 98% of the cooking etc. So he would hardly notice the size and uselessness of the kitchen)

If you've got the money, and don't need to wait ages for plans or permissions, then it would seem most sensible to crack on, IMO. Surely as part of the discussion the thing about 'this house would be best option if it had a bigger kitchen' was discussed, so you are only doing what you agreed as part of your family plan to buy this one and not the other. He can't then change mind on what you both agreed, if the money is there.
I could understand if you needed to wait while you saved.

Do it. It will disappear into the mayhem of moving and six months on you will be completely settled and won't remember any different. unless build takes two years like ours

We extended when we moved to this house. It was a 3 bedroom semi but the third bedroom just a big single. The difference between this house and a 4 bedroom was about £80,000 as the 4 bedroom houses are detached, but are so close together they might as well be semis !
We put plans in after a few months and added another bedroom, large separate shower room (hate en-suites), big walk in cupboard upstairs and a games/ family room downstairs. In terms of square footage it's actually slightly bigger than the 4 bed detached houses.
It cost a lot less to do than than the difference between a 3 bed and a 4 bed.
Do it now, get all the disruption out of the way rather than in a few years.

We did it. We started to plan the work even before me moved. I preferred to get the whole mess over and done with sooner rather than later. DTs were 2 at the time and though it was tricky having them in the house at the same time, we managed and it was much easier to do it that way than get settled and then have another upheaval. We also put quite a lot of things in storage for the duration, i.e books, papers, etc. We added an extension, a utility room, en-suite to main bedroom, removed a chimney breast and replaced the family bathroom. We cooked on a camping stove and microwave for 6 months. So much better doing it straight away.

As an aside, if you do need planning permission you can apply before becoming the owner. Get the disruption over and done with in one hit rather than 2. It will be a horrid few weeks, but then you'll forget about it and enjoy your space!!!
