Re directing post

AIBU to think that if you get some post for the previous occupants of your house you don't just bin it especially if the previous occupants cousin lives opposite. So cross as been waiting for some important correspondence and found out has gone to my old address. When found this out thought I would pop round to my old house to see if they had it and they have binned it. So cross as they know my cousin lives across the road from them so they could have passed to her? I always redirect post and thought it was common sense to do so - you don't just throw something out that doesn't belong to you.

I'm afraid this is completely on you! You can pay for your post to be redirected to your new address until you've changed with all companies. I'm binned the thousands of letters we've received for our bellend previous occupants. It's been 2 years and they should have sorted it. I'm not taking constant trips into town to take it all back to the PO.

Depends - did you redirect your post at all. Our previous owners did it for 3 months and then we have had 2 nearly 3 years of all sorts of stuff coming to us. Not just junk mail, DVLA documents, Share/Pension companies who have ended up writing to us asking for forwarding details as they have to keep writing until they are informed of a new address - we kept returning to sender, golf club membership details, we still get bank letters as well.

We now dump it all.

It's not their job to return your post surely? Maybe they have been getting loads of junk addressed to you, got fed up and just chuck everything?

Up to you to redirect your post via the post office service. I bin previous peoples post as its silly how much you get otherwise.

I do send things back marked 'return to sender' and pop them back in the post box. Not sure what is happening to any mail that goes to our old address, we rented it out for a few years and the redirect has a maximum of two years - I know we couldn't renew it at one point although I think we've got most things going to the right place!

We 've been moved over 3 years now and had 're direction set up for 2 years. I would understand if they were bombarded with our mail but they hadn't received anything for us for years and they remembered binning it as didn't look important. They only needed to give it to my cousin!!

But you said you were expecting the correspondence... You should have checked that they had your correct address. It really isn't their fault and you can't blame them I'm afraid. After 3 years I'd bin a letter from the Queen.

Noodledoodledoo · 11/07/2016 22:54

If it was that important why did you not check the address!

As I said we still get shares bank info for previous occupants it all goes in the bin now - its up to them to change the address.

You were expecting something at your old address?? Your fault 100%

Does the person now living there even know that your cousin lives across the street? And that you're close?

Redirect your post and inform everyone of your new address

noodle companies do not have to keep writing til they get a forwarding address! That's bullshit they're using to avoid paying a tracing company to do it. I work in financial services and once we're told someone isn't at that address we stop sending mail. We use tracing companies to track people down when we can. If I keep getting mail for people from a company who should know better (banks etc) I respond that they need to stop or they are breaching data protection by sending me someone else's details after repeatedly being told that person is no longer here.

peppajay stop blaming them! If you've been moved for almost 3 years you should've told whoever was sending you this item your new address! It's no ones fault but yours!

It was an admin error as all correspondence from them usually comes to our new address but for some reason the last 2 letters were sent out to our old address. Have complained as was not my fault we missed the appointments just find it odd that they binned it!!

I'd bin it. But then I've been in my house over 2 years and revive more mail for the previous owners than I do myself.

Thanks Wreckingball will send it back with that info on next time! Previous owners were spectacularly rubbish firstly and not ticking the no junk mail boX and secondly simple address changes!

I'll redirect for two years, even make an effort to contact companies and let them know they have moved, but then it goes in the bin. Three years on I'm still getting at least one letter a day for the previous owners. It's not my job to play postman for them.

Arkwright · 12/07/2016 05:59

Totally your fault. Why would they keep something for you when you moved out 3 years ago? Not their job to pass it onto your cousin.

Report
Chewits · 12/07/2016 06:09

I would bin it after that long, as I'd think surely nothing important would still be sent to an old address.

I always re-direct post addressed to the previous occupants of our rented home.

When we moved in their was a huge pile of post in the cupboard- I returned it all to sender.

Why not? It takes a couple of seconds to cross out the address & write "return to sender" then pop it in the post box.

I really don't get it when people just thrown other people's post in the bin.

Re-directing post is possible for 12 months or so, but even then things do slip through.

i didnt know my previous occupants address so returned it to sender. felt very sad for the young man, late teens/early 20s, who came round for his building society card, only to find I had returned it to sender.
still, shrugs, his problem not mine.

but op if you paid for 2 years after 3 years surely everyone would know your new address?

Report
NoahVale · 12/07/2016 06:36

anyway, i would probalby bin it, why shold they go over the road, particulary after 3 years, when it didnt look important.
i still get preivous occupants post, 11 years after the move

We've lived in our house for two years. I've been binning anything for the previous occupants for at least six months. I know their address, they live a ten minute walk away, but the way I see it - if they can't be arsed updating their details then it can't be that important. I'm not their secretary.

Report
MollyTwo · 12/07/2016 06:45

I would bin them too, even if you lived a minute away and I knew. It's entirely up to you to redirect and collect the post. The cheek of you getting upset when it's you who have been the nuisance!

I got so much that I was sick or writing 'return to sender, not known at this address' on it. So I bought a stamp from eBay and the kids enjoy stamping them and putting them in the post box. We still get a lot, and we've been here 5 years.

As I say wasn't my fault was an administration error and have taken it up with the health authority. I would have just thought the was common sense to pass it on especially as we are only a few streets away and the fact that they know my cousin really well in fact it was through knowing my cousin they bought our house. Just honeatly thought everyone redirected back to sender I wouldn't dream of putting a letter to someone else in the bin!!

It really isn't their problem to keep going over to your cousin to drop off mail. Sorry but they weren't wrong to bin it.
