AIBU?

To put guests in the attic instead of swapping the rooms around?

We have 3 bedrooms but the room that used to be the guest room is now an office (crammed with electronic stuff, DH needs access to it for his work project).

DS (10 months) has his own room, with ensuite and double bed. I sleep in with him as he wakes frequently and I'm trying to sleep-train. There's no space in our room for his cot and he hates the travel cot.

We have an attic conversation under the eaves m that's more a storage room. Lots of boxes of stuff and suitcases and I dry washing up there. If I move some boxes I can make space for a double camping mat.

We have guests a lot. When PILs stay I don't mind giving up our bedroom, but I'm fed up of doing this for other guests.

You have a double bed that is unoccupied and you want people to sleep on a mat in the attic?

Have fewer guests, if you dislike them this much.

Why not have you and DH sleep in DSs room on this double bed, and let the guests have your bed?

YABU.

You will get less visitors if you expect them to sleep on a camping mat amongst boxes Hmm

You and husband in bed in son's room, guests in your bed.

Yes best solution would be for you and DH to sleep in your ds room and let guests use your room.

Are they guests, visiting family or people that your doing a favour by letting them stay?

If their a guest, YABU. Visiting family can be worked out between you and anyone who your doing a favour for, then they take what you can provide.

I can't comfortably let someone sleep in my bed and struggle to sleep in my Adult DDs bed, where I know they've had sex.

A camping mat in between boxes are you joking?

It's a good way to stop people coming to stay...

You and dh on the double bed in Ds's room sounds like a good idea.

Is there anyway to make the attic more comfortable? Maybe a double height inflatable mattress rather than camping mats? Does it have windows up there?

How do you access the attic? Via a loft ladder?
Is there a loo up there or do you need to climb down the loft ladder whilst crossing your legs?

Is there any proper flooring? Is it clean? Are there cobwebs?

DH commutes and can't sleep well in DS' room as he wakes 4-5x night. I usually sleep in with DS (or end up there after the 3rd wake-up).

Guests are usually friends visiting for a weekend, or family coming for a few days. Its a sort of open invitation thing, which was fine when we had a guest-room (I kept the room tidy, the ensuite clean and the bed made up) but its now a major hassle that involves changing 2 sets of bedlinen, clearing personal stuff, deep cleaning bathrooms and moving all the things I need for work. I don't have the time/energy to keep doing it regularly.

2 sets of friends have asked if they can visit this month (with kids) and I'm dreading it.

I often think I should have the guests in the broom cupboard, but end up giving up our bed like you, OP.

Just say no then. Confused

You still have to do the bed linen and bathroom wherever they sleep.
You need to tell the guests they can't stay, you are too tired.

I agree with others, it sounds as though you simply are not set up to accommodate guests comfortably and not really into doing so.

If neither your husband nor son can change sleeping rooms, direct visitors to the nearest inn. I would not be happy to trudge past a double room with ensuite up to the attic just because you are trying to sleep train.

Then say, "no I'm sorry it's not convenient. Can we do it another time?"

Let your husband sleep up there if he really can't be in with you & your son.Hmm

There are 2 skylights up there and a proper staircase, and a bathroom (loo, bath but no shower, they'd be welcome to use one of the other bathrooms to shower. New carpet, lino in the bathroom. There's nowhere to move anything to, it's our only storage space.
I don't really want to buy an expensive double airbed.

Could you put ds in the attic?

Report
MudCity · 08/07/2016 16:06

Just say no, you don't have the space.

Roussette · 08/07/2016 16:08

If I were you I'd stick them in the downstairs loo or the airing cupboard. They won't come again then (nor will they if you put them in the attic on a mat amongst boxes whilst your little baby has a cot, double bed and en suite!)

Just move him!

Having read the thread I'm disappointed to read that there is a staircase. To really be inhospitable OP you should offer a ceiling hatch with a knotty rope for them to climb to the dusty boards and lumpy mattress provided amid the packing crates.
Just say no OP: or book the special travelodge deal at £20 a night: less hassle for you!

When they ask just say "sorry we don't have a spare room anymore."

sounds like you really don't want them to come!!

a double airbed can cost from as little as £20 - surely you can stretch to that? and surely your dh could sleep there for a few nights?

And attics are unbearably hot at this time of year. I can't even go in mine.

Are there any windows up there??!

Report
Farmmummy · 08/07/2016 16:21

I really don't see a problem it has a loo and a proper staircase, don't see why you should need to buy anything else. If you come to someone's home you can't expect them all to move around or hotel standard beds it sounds fine for guests. If however you really don't want them I would just tell them sorry but it really doesn't suit this time and hope they don't reschedule. Sympathy on the waking during the night btw!
