I don't. But my definition of middle class is those that go to work but don't need to.

Depends how you define middle class I suppose. I would say I am middle class, but I wouldn't be by your definition.

Do you know anyone from Albania?

I don't. But my definition of Albania is a magical submarine that flies through the sky.

No. But I know a Hell's Angel.

And two Albanians.

Regular Albanians, btw. Not magic sky Albanians.

We are middle class but only because we do work.

What an odd definition. Very, very few people can afford not to work - that's the super rich you're thinking of.

I know lots of middle-aged people.

They're all off their rockers, the weirdos.

I was thinking of David Cameron. He is the epitome of middle class to me. No financial need to work but does / did. Very few people are middle class
Loads think they are though

I know people who work when they don't have to, mainly through having a good job where they retired at 50 worth a decent pension and also inheriting from patented. I wouldn't call them middle class.

I am as middle class as can be. Although I'd argue with your definition.

Did you have a question?

People who don't need to work due to inherited wealth are definitely upper class.
The middle class has always been people who have made their own money.

Everyone is middle class these days... Hmm

Report
fastdaytears · 02/07/2016 15:45

When has being middle class ever meant not needing to work? That's a bit Hmm

Dave is definitely not middle class.

You seem confused OP.

Report
Ememem84 · 02/07/2016 15:46

So how would you define upper class?

Report
Obeliskherder · 02/07/2016 15:46

How do you define the upper classes, OP?

Report
HermioneWeasley · 02/07/2016 15:47

David Cameron went to Eton and isn't Sam Cam the daughter of an Earl or something?

Again, I think you are confused about what "middle class" means.

Doesn't caring what are class to are make you middle class?

Report
Tangoandcreditcards · 02/07/2016 15:47

Surely middle class is people who have surplus income after essentials (from v little to quite a lot). So still have to work?

People who have enough not to work are upper class or "new money". Grin

Definitely confused op. You are referring to the independently wealthy. They may be upper or middle class. But that is not the definition of middle class.....

David Cameron is what I would define as upper class

The majority of people in this country can't afford to not work, imo.

Class is an odd thing now these days, I don't think the distinctions are that clear anymore.

I would probably be considered middle class now, but I'm from a working class family and I still feel like I'm working class, if that makes any sense.

I know one person who fits into that category - only child of wealthy parents, privately educated, doesn't work, dots around playing the stock market and managing his investments. He is a very nice bloke too.

Nearly all of my friends are middle class - accountants, lawyers, doctors etc.

Saying middle class means that you choose to work even though you have the money not to is as daft as saying everyone who works is by definiition working class.
