To think it's a bit yuck that a cot mattress has been used for lots of other babies?

Hi all,

We are due to go on holiday abroad with a well know (very good profit making) tour operator with our 5 month old baby.

I was thinking about things I need to take and of course, I need cot sheets! I emailed customer services asking if they could assist with cot dimensions and whether the mattress is changed between stays.

They replied saying they can't assist with the dimensions of the cot and that they don't change the mattresses.

Re not changing the mattress, to me that feels a bit yuck and worries me about the risk of SIDS. I can't help feeling really uncomfortable about this and that anything could have been on the mattress / mattress could be damaged etc. I want to buy and take my own, but they won't help with dimensions!

AIBU to be concerned about the mattress and to also think that the customer service dept really haven't done anything to assist?!

If it's center parcs - then the cots are slightly narrower than normal size cots. The mattresses are wipe down ones. I was more than happy to put my DC in them.
Nobody expects a clean mattress for each visitor.

Did you really expect they would spend min £30 changing the cot mattress every time it is used?

Sorry, but that's a bit unreasonable. Take your own travel cot if you are worried.

You can get pop up travel cots that weigh next to nothing. Easy to take abroad with you!

If your DC goes to nursery they will nap in a cot previously used by other babies, how is this different?

I'd no more expect a new mattress for a baby than I would for an adult guest.

Are you seriously suggesting that they change the mattress every week or even for weekends? That would be insane.

If it's anything like the travel cot you get with eurocamp, there isn't an actual mattress anyway.

Yabu you honestly can't expect them to replace a mattress every time a guest leaves. I presume most people will take a travel cot.
Babies sleep on hospital mattresses that aren't changed. And also no I don't think the travel company were unhelpful, they've probably never been asked for dimensions. I took a large bed sheet for the cot when we went away then I knew it would fit.

If it's a holiday operator abroad they won't know the dimensions as all the villas/apartments are likely to have different travel cots. I have to confess, I've been taking my three abroad every year since the oldest was 6 months (he's now 8) and I've never really thought about cot mattresses. They've always provided sheets too, and if there had ever been an issue with the state of the cot, I'd have complained and had it replaced. If you can, take your own cot, if you can't, I think you may just have to deal with it.

I worked in a maternity unit for 25 years and other than replacement furniture once in a very blue moon I don't believe the cot mattresses were ever changed. Just cleaned after each use. Literally thousands of babies would have slept in most of those cots.

Take stretchy sheets, a sanitising spray and get over yourself. If there is a problem when you get there then make a fuss.

I think the fact that customer services couldn't help with dimensions, must indicate to you that they've never been asked this before. With good reason.

I hope you have also checked if they will also provide brand new carpets, wallpaper, chairs, appliances, lampshades, bath, shower, WC, windows, roof, floor, walls, air, water & sunlight? Get a grip.

It is unreasonable to expect them to change the mattress. However it is at odds with all the fuss that is made about getting a new mattress for each new baby even there clearly isn't anything wrong with it.

You want a brand new mattress to be supplied for your baby in a holiday let / hotel? YABU just take your own flat sheets then you don't need to know dimensions. If the mattress is soiled or damaged complain and get it changed other than that get a grip.

If it is wipe clean (which it should be) then take some sanitising wipes. Risk of SIDS related to the mattress is then gone.

Take a waterproof bed sheet with you to go around the mattress. Then your own sheet on top.

Why do you need to take cot sheets on a holiday abroad anyway? Surely they're provided? Are you taking sheets for your bed too?

Thanks all for your responses and to those who have assisted in putting my mind at ease/made good suggestions.

To those mentioning about hospitals / Mat units, the mattresses are completely cleaned down after every patient leaves as they have a plastic covering on them. That, I have no issue with.

To those suggesting I take my own mattress- I did make the point thatI want to, but am being given no dimensions to do so!

Re hotels and the beds, I'm not fussed about me. I've slept in some very iffy places in the past! However, this hotel guest is the most precious thing in my life...

Kp86-given it's a nearly £2k holiday, I kind of thought a 30 quid mattress wouldn't really put a dent in their profits...
