[ here]

Blah blah blah, soulthwold isn't what it was blah, blah blah, yet I will still keep my second home there to rent out

What a dick

Letmehaveausername Mon 27-Jun-16 12:58:24

Sorry but you've absolutely no reason to be even remotely offended or think this is cuntish....

dollylucy Mon 27-Jun-16 13:18:10

You're annoyed because she hasn't sold her house?

PaulAnkaTheDog Mon 27-Jun-16 13:22:48

Ummmmm. What;?!?

Tworingsandamicrowave Mon 27-Jun-16 13:29:38

Not sure why you're quite so upset with this. It's just one person's opinion, which she is perfectly entitled to. If this is all you have to worry about, lucky you!

Dawndonnaagain Mon 27-Jun-16 13:30:26

Not really sure why you're upset, and I'm local.

38cody Mon 27-Jun-16 13:34:19

Don't get your wrath - are you...Jealous?

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo Mon 27-Jun-16 13:35:00

It's such a boring article. Woman doesn't visit Southwold as often as she used to confused

Are you struggling to buy a house in Southwold and that's why you're upset?

She could rent a car for the trip if she hates the train that much hmm

BillSykesDog Mon 27-Jun-16 13:36:51

I can understand your frustration, wealthy second (and in this case third) homers do cause problems for affordability for locals, so to say the place is now rubbish is a bit of a slap of a face on top of that.

But remember you're on Mumsnet. Home of people who think they're socialists but have collections of buy to lets, think unaffordable housing is brilliant because they're coining it in from it and see nothing wrong with second or third homes when some people have nothing. C'est la vie on Mumsnet.

That isn't a clickable link for me. Google to the article shows that it was published on 20 Feb. Is that the correct date?

PaulAnkaTheDog Mon 27-Jun-16 13:37:51

But to call it cuntish is a bit strong!

Dawndonnaagain Mon 27-Jun-16 13:38:31

Southwold has never been affordable to locals, we go a little further out.

plimsolls Mon 27-Jun-16 13:38:35

I can't get that link to work. I used to hate her Guardian Family column....

SisterMoonshine Mon 27-Jun-16 13:41:07

Ah not seen a Julie Myerson thread in a long while.

ZansForCans Mon 27-Jun-16 13:42:10

God what a non-article. And it's not really a shocking turn-up for the books that JM is a bit selfish and tactless. Like writing an angsty novel about an unoccupied cottage and bleating on that she can't be arsed with her 3rd home!

Merrylegs Mon 27-Jun-16 13:46:27

Can't click on the link, but nice to see the Lowestoft Journal name checked on here. It'll be the Beccles and Bungay next and from there it's just a geographical side-step to the EDP.

MitzyLeFrouf Mon 27-Jun-16 13:47:16

I wonder how Julie Myerson's poor son is doing these days.

Dawndonnaagain Mon 27-Jun-16 13:54:18

So tempted to nip out for a Beccles and Bungay Merry! grin

Letmehaveausername Mon 27-Jun-16 13:54:54

BillSykes actually, I'm on very low income and live in a LA flat with no prospects to buy in my area in the future because most homes around here are buy to let's owned by people who don't live here. And I still think it's absolutely nothing to be offended about...

RaptorInaPorkPieHat Mon 27-Jun-16 13:59:04

Isn't Southwold in Upstairs Downstairs?

<Misses entire point of thread>

TanTanNubuck Mon 27-Jun-16 14:16:39

Raptor grin

'Cuntish' is a tad over the top, OP. YABU.

ssd Mon 27-Jun-16 14:20:55

absolutely raptor

Lady Marjorie's family home

(yes I am that sad)

LardLizard Mon 27-Jun-16 17:05:44

Bill, thanks for explaining what I mean

massive bunch of champagne socialists on here

Goes off to take a chill pill

AristotlesTrousers Mon 27-Jun-16 17:31:16

YABU. Practically every other house in Southwold is a second home, so freeing up Julie Myerson's won't make the problem go away. Southwold will probably never be affordable for most of us. A shame, but what can you do?

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo Mon 27-Jun-16 17:33:19

I don't own one house, let alone a second one. I have big problems with unaffordable housing and have campaigned locally for more affordable housing. I just thought that "cuntish" was a bit extreme.

We come to Southwold for holidays quite frequently, in fact we will be there next month. We usually rent a cottage for the week. It's quite hard to know what to do for the best ethically. While we are there we will support local businesses and avoid Tesco etc. But obviously the house we are renting could be someone's home instead.

I don't mean this sarcastically, at all. Would you rather that there were fewer tourists? Or just that they stayed in hotels rather than houses?

Or is just empty second homes that are the problem? My old employers had a second home. I find the idea odd, to be honest. It seems a huge waste to have a house sitting empty for most of the year just so they could stay there occasionally. And you still need to pack all your clothes and stuff to take with you, so it doesn't really seem to be that different from renting a house.
