I have seen several people repeating this on facebook on local sites. It serves to keep remain voters at home and to force lazy leave voters to the polls. This is not true. It's not about getting enough people to vote out.

They will be counting the people who voted. If you don't vote you have no voice.

I don't know if they believe it or if they're just trying to convince other people to believe it but yes I've seen lots of it.

It's not that unreasonable a miscomprehension.

Certainly in the country where I live it is not enough to get a majority vote in a ref. In order to be carried the vote must have been cast by a minimum percentage of the eligible electorate. I just can't remember what that minimum is and DH is still bumbling around in a pre-coffee state so has not yet hit the point where he understands my (temporarily garbled by over excitement) Italian.

the legislation to hold this referendum does not actually define what happens afterwards. There is no definition of the majority needed to make a decision, nor is it actually mandatory for the government to abide by the majority.

legally it is just an opinion poll - same as the Scottish one was.

still no excuse not to get your arse to the polling station and put a cross in a box.
