to say that NO VOTE is NOT counted as a REMAIN vote! If you want to remain you must vote for it!

I have seen several people repeating this on facebook on local sites. It serves to keep remain voters at home and to force lazy leave voters to the polls. This is not true. It's not about getting enough people to vote out.

They will be counting the people who voted. If you don't vote you have no voice.

Really? People actually believe this?

Twooter Thu 23-Jun-16 08:12:32

To be fair, if someone is stupid enough to believe that, they're too stupid to deserve a vote.

Do people really believe that not voting counts as remain? If they do, they have a very shaky grasp on how democracy works.

I haven't seen this on my FB, but then I am sure that no one I know thinks their vote means anything if they don't place it.

People really believe that not voting is counted as a vote to stay in?

Are they a bit stupid?

GodDamnThatTurtle Thu 23-Jun-16 08:19:22

I don't know if they believe it or if they're just trying to convince other people to believe it but yes I've seen lots of it.

I think they they think that there needs to be a majority of the population vote to change things as it's not an election.

So, in your opinion Op, the remainers are easily swayed and fickle whereas the exiters are lazy. Nice!

It's not that unreasonable a miscomprehension.

Certainly in the country where I live it is not enough to get a majority vote in a ref. In order to be carried the vote must have been cast by a minimum percentage of the eligible electorate. I just can't remember what that minimum is and DH is still bumbling around in a pre-coffee state so has not yet hit the point where he understands my (temporarily garbled by over excitement) Italian.

Good Heavens, Painted! How in the world did you arrive at that conclusion? confused

GodDamnThatTurtle Thu 23-Jun-16 08:43:51

Honestly tanith, it's just too early for that level of ridiculous. Best to ignore.

ipost tbf, I actually think it would be a reasonable way to run the thing. But as it's not I just want everyone to go out and vote.

PaintedDrivesAndPolishedGrass Thu 23-Jun-16 17:09:30

becsuse that is how it reads Op.

the legislation to hold this referendum does not actually define what happens afterwards. There is no definition of the majority needed to make a decision, nor is it actually mandatory for the government to abide by the majority.

legally it is just an opinion poll - same as the Scottish one was.

still no excuse not to get your arse to the polling station and put a cross in a box.
