and park outside someone else's house. They should be banned.

There's a car parked outside, the alarms been going off for 3hrs. It's now 3am. This happenes regularly but with different cars.

Are alarms even a deterrent? when I hear one now, I don't think 'oh gosh quick someone could be breaking into that car' I think 'oh look what an arsehole parking outside my bedroom window with their alarm going if at 3am' if I saw someone stealing it I would be releived the noise had stopped and I could get some sleep.

LOL before we moved we used to have an issue with this. Every few weeks the alarm would go off for bloody ages. The person lived next door too but the alarm never seemed to actually wake him up. Which kind of begs the question, why bother having it? Assuming everyone else who is woken up by it will check your car and call the police if needed? Arsehole that he was...

Luckily we didn't have the kids then so it was just us annoyed by it. I would be going insane if it was waking the kids up and keeping them up for hours too

It is noise nuisance. Try going to your local council and asking about getting a noise abatement order served if you know who the car belongs to.

Perhaps they can trace the owner with the registration number if you don't know who it is. Worth a try?

That would drive me insane.

I called 101 and the police actualy turned up! Luckily just in time and they didn't catch me the eggs and flour I was preparing (I honestly turn in to a complete bunny boiler with lack off sleep) I'm not sure the police can't do anything but im impressed they turned up.

Don't car alarms come as standard though?

Report

Yanbu but i think most cars come with car alarms as standard now. Its not an extra. Luckily my car didnt but it is x years old. Yabu on blaming the owner on something they have no control on and parking outside your house if a legal road and car taxed and insured.

No, all come with immobilisers but not an alarm. It seems to me that only the really shite cars with dick owners have alarms (vast sweeping generalisation based on our NDNs who have a shitty old x-trail that has zero need for an alarm)

My car and DHs have alarms that came as standard. Confused

I haven't heard of anyone having an alarm actually fitted for years.

You've just reminded me of another reason why I'm glad I've moved out of the city.

I will have to ask DH. Neither of our cars are old, maybe I have it wrong but I think I have heard his car's alarm go off once.

Miaow that's making my blood boil even though it was years ago and never affected me.

OP YANBU. I had a rant about this to DH a while ago after having a peaceful day off in the garden disturbed by some dickhead's car alarm Angry
He called me a crank.

It's house alarms around here. They go off a lot for no reason.

Mine has an alarm as standard. All of my cars have had factory fitted alarms as standard. There's no way to disable them. Does that make me an arse? Hmm

My last two cars have had a car alarm as standard, and both of them have ended up with a fault that no one seems to be able to fix, whereby they go off in the rain Hmm. I would prefer a car with no alarm, I agree that no one pays any attention to them anyway.

You'll be glad to know that I make sure to immobilise the alarm every time I lock the car.

They sometimes go off near me but the owner turns them off almost straightaway as they aren't arses.

My car and Dhs van were bought from new and came fitted with an alarm. Ds's car is on a 53 plate and his to has an alarm. We didn't ask for them.

My car and H's also have alarms as standard.

There is usually a way to disable them - check the manual, as they can need disabling for eg ferry crossings or transporting in general.

YANBU do being annoyed though. We too have more house alarms going off than car alarms.

Are you confused with 20 years ago? Dont all cars have them factory fitted? No idea but i tgought it was a bit like electric windows - once exciting extra now bog standard. Do you hate people who have house alarms too? Or perhaps people with faulty alarms who dont get them fixed?

Report
PeterandJudithSurname · 19/06/2016 08:07

Yanbu op. That would drive me mad. I think you should report them every time it isn't turned off immediately.
Can a garage really not disable an alarm?

I have taken enough interest to find a whole website about car alarms :)
Most do have the highest rating 1 immobiliser plus alarm but it seems some cars are still being sold with just the immobiliser so category 2 alarms. Wonder if some still dont have electric windows/central locking too. Fascinating :)
