To think I shouldn't pay for replacement GHD hair straighteners

I'm not sure if I'm being unreasonable here.

My wife has a pair of 5 year old God hair straighteners. They have an intermittent wiring fault that means they are very much hit and miss in their operation.

She'd used them last night and left them plugged in and balanced precariously on the mantle piece with the wire dangling down. As I walked into the lounge this morning I got my foot caught around the trailing wire (nearly going flying in the process) and pulled the straighteners off the mantelpiece and onto the stone floor below.

I've had a series of angry texts demanding that I buy her a new pair of ghd straighteners at a cost of £100 plus. (We have separate finances)

I think she's being unreasonable. Because

A) They were a knackered pair of straighteners on their last legs that she would have needed to replace anyway in the next few months.

B) left in such a stupid place they were bound to get damaged and cause an accident in the process.

I've offered £30 towards the cost of a replacement, but she is adamant I should pay the full cost of a new pair.

AIBU?

YANBU
I would offer to buy them for next birthday/Christmas/present occasion though.

She is being very unreasonable! I would not put up with my DP sending me angry texts demanding money like that. I also wouldn't dream of treating him that way when I was at fault - I would be more concerned that he might have hurt himself because of my stupidity.

As I tell my DC. If you leave your things lying about in silly places, don't blame someone else if they get damaged.

YANBU.

I'd go half if I broke something like that of my husband's.

She shouldn't have left them there but you did break them. If you hadn't, she wouldn't be looking at forking out £100 right now.

If you have accidental damage on your contents insurance you can claim on that if it's worth it.

Does the seperate finances cause an issue in general? Does she have the money to buy a new pair? Is she feeling stretched financially? Is there a big mismatch in uput finances?

Might explain her reaction

Does she have equal spending power to you? ie after bills do you have the same amount of cash for spending?

GHDs from eBay are only good for parts

They become shit after a few years anyway.

Get some Coriolis ones instead

Fair enough if she's in a difficult financial situation, but that would make me take even more care of my belongings if I knew I wouldn't be able to afford to replace them. Nobody needs GHD's either. There are cheaper straighteners.I have some and I find them a bit shit. Although my hair is a frizzy mess so nothing really helps.

Can either/both of you reasonably afford the cost of replacements?

If the drip feed is she is a Sahm who you keep poor as a church mouse and last night was her first night out for 5 years and she's wearing an asda bra with a hole in because she can't buy herself new clothes then yup yabu.

If the reverse she is.

If you both have broadly similar finances well then the question still remains WHY you have separate finances with your wife. Share your heart and home and all that.

You owe her the cost of a like-for-like replacement, the cost of a 5 year old knackered set, so your offer is reasonable. You don't need to buy her a new pair and therefore put her in a better position than she was before the incident.

YANBU, I'd tell her to take a running jump because of the demanding text messages alone.

And it's up to the OP and his wife if they have separate finances, not everyone has joint accounts y'know?

Love God straighteners Grin They are godlike I agree

Me and DP have separate finances but his are substantially a lot more than mine, so I wouldn't be able to replace them and he wouldn't even notice £100 if it fell down the side of the sofa. He would replace them but I totally agree that they aren't worth replacing with brand new GHDs.... This sounds bad but is there a chance she's laying it on thick to make you feel guilty enough as she wanted a new pair badly anyway?

I could just say "DP my straighteners are shit and he would say let's go halves on a new pair" rather than all the blaming each other Confused

Cakescakescakes · 18/06/2016 12:22

Why are you both being so hostile to each other? Doesn't sound like a pair of GHD's is the big problem.

Report
WalkingBlind · 18/06/2016 12:23

Also it depends if you can afford to replace them, if you easily can I'd be saying to her "maybe if you hadn't kicked off and made demands I would have surprised you with a pair", her attitude of entitlement makes her seem very undeserving of an expensive gift, sorry

I agree Cakes - the God straighteners (love that!) sound like a catalyst rather than an actual problem. This is not how people talk to each other in a happy relationship Sad

Fairenuff · 18/06/2016 12:27

Is £100 really that much of a stretch for either of you? Could you not just pay half each to get some new ones. As you say, they would have needed replacing soon anyway.

Marriage is supposed to mean sharing everything. Why is this such an issue between you? Do you jointly pay for toilet roll or buy your own, for example?
