To Set Up a JustGiving Page?

I am in a right pickle!

A month ago I was driving back home from town and my front left wheel went in a massive pot hole that I couldn't miss (oncoming traffic meant I couldn't swerve round it as it stretched out into the road).

The wheel went in the hole with a massive bang and the front suspension cracked. I managed to limp the car home (DH and DCs all with me) and found that the top mount had shattered. I stupidly called my insurance because not only did it damage my car, but it also did something to my already damaged spine - the pain in my left shoulder and hand is the worst I've experienced in 8 years since I was attacked). Anyway, the insurance company took the car, told me it was a write-off and sent me the money for it, less the excess. The excess however, was £650 which meant the cheque for the balance is way under £1000. I can't find a 7 seater car for under £1000 for love nor money so we are stuck in our village. The school is in the village so we're ok getting to school, but we cannot go anywhere as a family, 2 of us have to stay at home (I borrowed a 5 seater to get DH to work).

The insurance company said I will have a good chance of recovery because there was a red line round the massive hole and the fact, 4 weeks on, it still has not been filled in. But they just don't know when that will be settled.

WIBU to do a justgiving page to help raise money to get a new car under the circumstances? I suppose, if you don't ask, you don't get, but would people really help us?

When I get the money back from the insurance company, I would donate any donated money back to charity of course, because it would be better for someone more in need to have it..... a kinda pass-it-on.....

What do you think (and be kind - I haven't done it yet)

You can do what you want. But I wouldn't give to it.

I'm sorry about your car, but theres no way I would give you any money towards it.

I don't know if this is meant to be a joke.
But I'd not donate, no. And I'd judge you for being so grabby.

No you can't do this. This isn't a dire circumstance like losing everything in a fire or needing to raise money for a child's wheelchair.

If I saw such an appeal, I'd absolutely cringe. At the risk of sounding harsh, save up for the car you want like everybody else!

ah, thank you :(

Just feel so trapped, life has not been kind to us - this is not the worst thing that's happened unfortunately......

ah well.....

If you can get food to eat, get to work and get the kids to school then a car is not an essential. Is there any public transport? Can you get a (small) loan or use an overdraft?

I really, really wouldn't.

Try to find a low interest loan until you get the money back? Don't car companies do 0%?

Hey op, I can see that this is a really difficult situation, and it must be having a huge impact on your lives. However like pp I would find it a bit odd to see a just giving page for this, simply because people's cars go out of action all the time for many unexpected reasons, it's something most of us will have to deal with at some point.

Have you considered leasing? We lease a family car (not the size you would need) for £150 a month, which includes insurance and repairs. If you have a bit of money you could use each month, but not enough to buy a car outright right now, it could work for you.

In general, people don't search through JustGiving to find causes to donate to. The causes that do well are the ones that are well promoted, either locally amongst friends/colleagues/family, or those that go viral and are widely linked on news sites.

There's nothing wrong with setting up a JustGiving for this, there are JustGiving pages for weekly takeaways and deposits and probably everything else. Most JustGiving pages don't get beyond 5% of their target, though.

So the question isn't really "Would people really help us?", it's more, "Do you know enough people that would put a fiver in a pot and help this gain traction?"

I'm sorry about your car. It sounds like a really awkward situation.

Sorry about your car it sounds awful, however, this is not what Just Giving is for and I don't know anybody who would donate to something like this

Get the bloody bus Hmm. You seriously want complete strangers to buy you a new car because you "can't leave the village"?

You're free to do as you like, but I wouldn't give to this, especially as you will eventually get money back from the insurance.

Life is unkind to a lot of people, but this is a car, not life-saving treatment or the like, and one that you will eventually be compensated for due to the council's not looking after the road properly.

This is a temporary inconvenience to you all.

Yeah, I'd judge, too.

I am shocked that you expect ordinary people to fund a new car for you, however, if you don't ask you don't get, so if you've got the front to do it, why not.

It's a tough one.

I once set up a page for a family going through a rough time (with their permission). Generally, as a community we wanted to rally round and help them.

If they had set up the page themselves I thubk thy might have been accused of being a bit grabby.

Then again, pages are set up all the time for all sorts of things.

If we could get the bus, we would. The bus routes in this part of the country are not good. To get to a bus, we'd have to walk 2 miles on country lanes with a newborn!

I don't want strangers to buy me a car! I was just asking if it's something someone would do.....sheesh!! I just hope you aren't in a needy position!

Thank you everyone who's sympathised about my car. We literally have no other financial options due to my injury. Ah well, will just have to wait until the claim against the council goes through - it's been 4 weeks, just wish I knew how much longer it might take.......sigh......

You expect other people to buy you a new car? Wtaf? I am staggered. If you don't have the means to pay then you don't have the item. It's really quite a simple equation in life.

I don't know if it exists in the UK but you might look into taking over someone else's car lease.

and, as I said before, it was a question to see if I should, not that I would.....and I am not going to.

You "don't want strangers to buy me a car"

It sort of begs the question what you do want money for, then Hmm

Report

You are not needy. You have housing, work, food, schooling for your children. You even have a working car, it's just temporarily not the one you want.

seeing as there is NO page, I haven't asked, it was a question - an idea...... blimey!!
