To be glad I have noisy neighbours?

After reading some threads recently about people who's neighbours come round and shout as a result of DIY work or kids playing in the garden I'm feeling grateful for my noisy neighbours.

I used to have an elderly couple on one side and the woman used to scream at us for things like our visitors parking outside their house (not obstructing their blocked curb), being outside in the garden past 9pm and not cutting our hedge to her preferred height (the man used to sneak out and cut it when I was out of the house).

Now I have a younger couple with four boys ranging in age from 3 to 15 and a dog. They are noisy, they shout at each other. They have a paddling pool and a trampoline and balls fly over the wall regularly. Sometimes they stay up late in the garden and sometimes they have parties. They play the radio outside a lot.

But they smile when we see each other, they always ask politely for balls back and never harass us and they have never complained once about us leading our lives as people in urban areas do. And, luckily I like their taste in radio.

Reading about some of the cantankerous neighbours other posts are faced with I'm really grateful for the Noisington family. They will never come round and have a go for wallpaper stripping.

Anyone else feel the same?

Easiest answer is to buy detached, then you can do mostly what you like without offending neighbours

I agree OP.

We live in a terraced house, (though the houses are quite big so that helps I think) and both sides have dogs that bark more than ours does. The people we lived beside before were round complaining every time our dog barked. Which wasn't often or for long. It was ridiculous. Now I can relax.

One side also has kids the same age as ours, who cry and shout and laugh and scream as much as ours do. They also play music loud and have a huge paddling pool in the garden. Their visitors park all over the place and they regularly have parties.

One neighbour we had in the past had a 6 month old PFB and would come round and tell us we were only allowed to hoover between 4 and 6 pm. Hmm She was actually batshit in many ways.

Such a relief to be living near people who just live and let live.

Unless you can't afford a detached house! Not easy to magic up the extra money. And can still have noise from gardens even if you have a detached house.

I have a noise neighbour upstairs and he actually had the cheek to complain about me in facts most his complaints are just made up and nonsense. He claims I threw paint on the walls but there is none there

Thanks for that 7 days - hadn't thought of buying detached!

I'm pretty sure my neighbour to the right has bodies buried in his garden. Therefore it's unlikely he'll moan about anything I do.

Other neighbours let fag smoke waft over the fence, play irritating radio out the front while he washes his car daily and have a yappy spaniel thing. Again, it's unlikely that anything I could do would offend them.

It's all groovy.

I know what you mean, it's so much nicer to not have to worry. My neighbours are pretty loud they shout and have parties, but I can't say it's ever impacted my life in any way. Plus they wouldn't dare complain about our noise levels!

I know what you mean. My concern when buying a house was always more about us not disturbing others too much, rather than worrying about neighbour making noise themselves. However, when I read threads on here, I often notice how intolerant the posters are, not always the neighbours.
I believe in a bit of give and take / understanding / flexibility. I also believe in getting to know the neighbours, popping round now and then and generally talking to people in life. Helps a lot.

Oooo, and next door's cat does his shits amongst my lavender.

I don't mind. He's a nice cat.

Lizkeen-

I really hope you didn't Hoover only between 4-6 that's ridiculous.

Nope. My upstairs neighbours kept us all awake until 1.30 this morning. They've had complaints from either side, above and now below. They're a fucking nightmare.

Mine has a dog that barks from the moment she leaves. It drives me batshit but does have some advantages:

  1. She's lost the moral high ground on noise.
  2. I know when she's out so can whack up my music/tv to brain numbing.

Yes this is me, we don't mind as we are equally as noisy. Much rather be able to live life with shrieks of laughter, paddling pool/trampoline fun and music than being worried about noise pollution Grin. Of course there are times when we are quiet (midnight-6am) but then life is for living right ?
