AIBU?

To wish people wouldn't chat in coffee shops

Sitting in Costa with a latte choc muffin and my iPad. Can't concentrate because I'm surrounded by people yattering on about the Queen's birthday celebrations, their ailments in too much detail, conducting interviews for dodgy sounding jobs and making loud phone calls.

AIBU to wish they'd STFU and let me enjoy my coffee in peace?

Yabu. If you want coffee in peace, go home and not somewhere social.

PatMullins · 13/06/2016 09:51

How dare they socialise in public.

YABU - coffee shop is the last place I'd go for peace and quiet.

Taken the coffee to go and sit in a park

Yanbu.

I don't like people much though.

Yes!

This is what coffee shops are for!

Go home if you want peace.

It's a cafe, not a library.

The fuckers, daring to chat to their friends in a place designed for that purpose.

Why did you think a coffee shop was a good place for quiet and concentration?
Perhaps try a soft play centre or the island of a busy roundabout next time you need peace and quiet.

Thanks, Alis - I knew I would find my people Grin

I'd stay home but I can't make coffee as good as Costa/Starbucks.

I think the op is being lighthearted?

Ha! I strongly appreciate people being quieter than they seem capable of being Sybil.

It's the sheer volume people seem to find it necessary to speak at. Like it doesn't count unless everyone in the venue can hear your conversation.

YANBU. I fucking hate it. But not as much as those selfish fuckers in nightclubs who insist on dancing to loud music, or those reprobates in restaurants who feel it's somehow appropriate to eat smelly food, or those idiots in the cinema who insist on watching films on a huge fucking screen. Pah.

It's not so much people talking - you can't avoid that, its often the volume of the talking as in people who are sitting next each other shouting like they are on opposite ends of the cafe that I find annoying. And when the music is super loud too. Regular convos and normal volume music can be addressed with ear plugs :)

There'll be another thread in a minute about grumpy table hoggers on their tablets in coffee shops.

I'm assuming you're being lighthearted OP, otherwise, try a library or your house.

Maybe they should have talking and non-talking areas, just like there used to be smoking and non-smoking. Until cafes get round to this I would suggest listening to music I always have headphones with me and if I don't want too much noise just listen to some chilled classical music.

It's Monday morning.

Any sane person would like to see the general public terminated with extreme prejudice so they can drink their coffee in peace.

YANBU.

People! Talking in a coffee shop?! Bloody outrageous! Wink

Report
YokoUhOh · 13/06/2016 10:02

OP totally.

Whatever happened to conducting interviews in an office, with a formidable-looking panel peering over their horn-rimmed specs scribbling furiously as you tell them about your weaknesses ('too much attention to detail sometimes slows me down...').

I sat through an 'interview' in an ice cream parlour not long ago (I wasn't the interviewee). Ruined my banana split blithering on about 'when you get to panel'. How about skip this one, then, and leave me in peace?

I sat through an interview in Macdonalds once. It was weird.

Anyone can make coffee better then Costa, seriously!

Report
SybilEngineer · 13/06/2016 10:07

Yes - the volume! If I were telling my coffee shop companion about Uncle Jeff's medical procedure, I would do so in a hushed tone.

And why do the group of friends in the corner assume everyone wants to hear about their upcoming cruise/their granddaughter's 21st etc

And I really want to urge the young woman opposite not to even consider taking the dodgy sales job the young man is pitching to her.

I kind of know what you mean OP. I often think people have conversations for the 'benefit' of other people. Most conversations I overhear are tedious as fuck.

Hey - you are tongue in cheek presumably. You can get your coffee "to go" if you have a thing for that specific type of coffee, and go and drink it at home...

Coffee is just an excuse to sit somewhere warm and dry and public usually - to meet people or to kill time between having to be in other near by places or just to get out of the house - they are not well known for being oasis of silent contemplation....

Aren't coffee shops historically hubs of vice and scandal and political plotting, never of actual coffee worship...

YWNBU if you wrote that you wished that people would have more interesting/ scandalous / internationally significant/ intelligent conversations for you to eves drop on and that you are bored to death of hearing about Uncle Albert's hernia operation or the Queen's birthday or the grandaduaghter's 21st, on the other hand :o
