Left out of street party

First ever AIBU thread, (dons hard hat) here goes: we live on a corner, with our entrance off the main road but our garden wall running along about a third of the side road if that makes sense.

It's an area with a lovely community spirit. Neighbourhood watch email group etc. After we moved in about 7 years ago we were invited to a number of drinks parties by people living both along the main road and the side road. A couple of years ago we invited all our neighbours (main road and the first couple of houses on the side road / behind our house as they were the ones we knew) to a Christmas drinks party.

Yesterday as I was driving DS2 to an activity we noticed some men putting up a "Road Closed" sign at the entrance of our side road. DS2 happily exclaimed: looks like they're having a street party".

AIBU that they should have at least notified us that it was happening? We don't have an entrance to the side road where this was happening as our address is off the main road, but our whole property including our back garden borders this road, and probably makes up a third of the length of the road.

The music and loudspeaker action all day was very loud, with bands/loud music playing and announcements etc - enough to make it impossible to sit in our garden. Our kids ran out at one point to see what was going on and came back super excited about balloons, games, cakes etc, but we didn't feel able to go out and join in as we hadn't contributed in any way. AIBU to think that maybe they should have let us know that it was happening and invited us to join in?

Could it be the organiser isn't someone who knows you?

I think you should have just joined in

Another one who thinks you just should have joined in.

Maybe they forgot to ask you and were wondering where you were!!

I think you should definitely just have gone. Organising these things is a huge amount of work and they need to you help, and not just get worked up because they haven't taken enough time over you.

We have street parties every year and if neighbours from the next street want to come then we are glad to have them and just add them to the email list for next time.
