When showering

Read an article in daily mail recently saying , when showering, you should only use soap or gel on bits and pits to avoid drying out your skin. Just water is apparently all that's needed to keep the rest of you clean. As someone who has washed every inch of my body with anti bac soap for the last 30 years since giving up baths, I found this hard to believe. When I asked my daughter, sister and husband what they thought, I was surprised that they all only soap bits and pits. How could I not know this? AIBU to ask what your showering habits are?

Hubby does this, a hangover from military days with restricted shower time. I do the lot!

MrsSpecter Mon 06-Jun-16 22:28:03

Nope. I soap all over. Wont ever stop either.

Drinksforeveryone Mon 06-Jun-16 22:30:56

I have never soaped all over.

Just the smelliest parts - and my face and hair.

I sometimes shower twice a day- my skin would peel off if I washed all over with soap.

All over for me too, my back and chest are both oily, I wash my face everyday for the same reason! I don't use soap though, I use a gentle body wash and a soft sponge.

I use soap all over too. You really don't need anti-bac soap though! shock

I thought it was bad for your skin to soap all over, I do underarms, downstairs (with femfresh - no soap!!!), feet and head hair. After exercise though j do all over.. And obviously wash hair.

Soap really should not be used on 'bits'! It can disrupt the healthy bacteria there and often leads to irritation.

I soap everywhere else, but just a quick wipe rather than any scrubbing. Soap's not very good for the skin.

All over-bits and pits aren't the only parts that sweat. Judging by the amount of shower gel we go through DH is an all over man too.

Haggisfish Mon 06-Jun-16 22:34:42

What?! Anti bac everywhere?! You are breeding your own super resistant colonies doing that!! I just wash pits and quick rub over rest with suds. One big squish of shower gel does it all!

I use shower gel/body wash all over, I'd feel so disgusting if I didn't. I shower once a day.

pigsDOfly Mon 06-Jun-16 22:35:31

I've never heard of this. I wouldn't feel clean with just water.

It's not just your 'bits and pits' that sweat and surely water on it's own won't wash sweat off your skin.

gaggiagirl Mon 06-Jun-16 22:36:57

I don't soap arms and legs in the shower but they get clean from the hot water and suds washing over them from other soaped body parts.I shower twice daily and would be very dry if I soaped all over.

I use shower gel everywhere apart from my legs! In particular, under my boobs get sweaty so they need a good wash!

I have no doubt this thread will reveal some really bizarre habits "I shower 6 times a day and use a clean towel every time and anyone who doesn't is a slut"

Normandy144 Mon 06-Jun-16 22:37:00

I use one of those shower puff things with a squirt of shower gel and do all over.

KateLivesInEngland Mon 06-Jun-16 22:40:03

This is interesting!
I do a pits n bits wash if I'm in a super hurry but generally lather up my sponge and skim it all over me.
Can I ask what 'soap' you use? All my friends seem to use various shower gel whereas I use good old imperial leather soap bars as It's the only thing that makes me feel clean but when I've mentioned it to friends they joke that I'm like their granny. (I'm 32)
I also use vagisil wash, if I run out and have to use soap, I'm very irritated after day 2ish.

Pits and bits under boobs and feet. My legs in particular would flake off with soap or shower gel. I have very dry skin.

Ludways Mon 06-Jun-16 22:41:41

Only soap the bits, puts and sometimes feet (I'd do them more but they make me slippy). Soap on the rest of my body makes me itch like crazy, no way. Water is good enough to swill me down.

anahata Mon 06-Jun-16 22:42:48

Definitely all over for me.

I gave up using soap all over a couple of years ago, and my skin feels far more healthy now. Warm water from the shower is really the best thing for your skin. I just exfoliate all over twice a week or so.

You really shouldn't use soap on your bits, ever!

callherwillow Mon 06-Jun-16 22:44:27

I soap all over.

I used to work with elderly people and they all used to wash their ears very vigorously with the flannel hmm

SabineUndine Mon 06-Jun-16 22:45:53

I bath 2x a day and soap my pits and bits. About 3x a week, I go over the rest with a rough 'massage sponge' and shower gel. I know people say you shouldn't soap your bits but it's only the external parts I do, and I make sure I rinse all the soap off.

AaoograhaHoa Mon 06-Jun-16 22:46:18

Feeling like a filthy monkey over here.

Never use soap - only hot water for morning showers (every day).

Use shower gel for pits and bits after sport... blush

TheDuchyOfGrandFenwick Mon 06-Jun-16 22:47:12

I use dove soap and soap all over.

adagio Mon 06-Jun-16 22:49:21

This is a revelation. I had no idea!

I scrub all over with an exfoliating glove and sanex and I had no idea this was wrong!

Face gets face wash and clarisonic, hair is shampoo twice and conditioner, but since having babies and stopping smoking have stepped the hair back to alternate days instead of daily. I never thought this was unusual 😀
