She's 8. She started with a very sore throat last night (we're in Australia so now it's Monday evening)

She woke up and it was very red and swollen and her head ached so kept her off school as she was also hot to touch.

This afternoon I got an email from school...telling parents that Hand and Foot and Mouth has been going round.

Fine...it might be that I think. She's had it before and I know it's not nice but not worried.

But then she said her neck was itchy...both sides... down those two long muscles which run from behind your ear to your shoulder...they're bright red, with small rough bumps....it faded breifly and looked like your skin does when you sit too close to the fire....but now it's back and she says it's sore and itchy.

I keep thinking Scarlett Fever....but could it be Hand and Foot? I've made an appointment with GP tomorrow....what do you think?

Not to frighten you but have you done the meningitis glass test on the rash?

No because she won't bloody let me! Sad I'm going to have to try again aren't I? She doesn't seem THAT unwell...definitely not herself etc...but not limp or lying down. She's sitting up, wrapped in a blanket on beanbag watching tv.

I'd rather be safe, I am not neurotic but when it comes to rashes I don't like to take a chance. Hope she will be OK :)I don't know much about Scarlet fever but maybe take her to OOH?

Phone your GP. If it is scarlet fever she needs antibiotics. Without them it can be very serious.

It could just be a viral rash, along with a viral sore throat. But much better to check it I think.

Doesn't sound like scarlet fever - rash looks like sand paper. Probably a viral rash, however could it be mumps? Worth checking.

Dr - call out or go but stop faffing around online and get medical advice!

I can't just go to the doctor...I live in rural Australia and DH is away at work...and I don't drive.

There are no buses here.

The rash is still there but hasn't moved or grown. She still has the sore throat but is fine in herself. I can't call an ambulance for that.

She will be at the Drs tomorrow....I just wanted to hear from people who've experience Scarlet Fever really....to see if it was a possibility.

Sounds like a strep infection. She may need antibiotics

Shopping thanks for asking...we went to the doctor and he said it was tonsillitis with a rash which he thought was part of it because sometimes, bacterial infections result in a rash which just pops up and is related.

He said to keep her off school today too incase it gets worse....it's not worse but she's not herself...she's just VERY annoyed she's going to miss the end of the story they've been reading in class!

I'll have to ask her teacher to give her a recap bless her.
