AIBU?

To want to knock on my neighbours door

and tell them to turn their music down!

Lovely Sunday afternoon perfect sunshine! Out with 3yo and 7mo old in our garden, playing in paddling pool etc.

At about 2 our next door neighbours (we are semi detached) start having a get together - I don't have a problem with this.

Then they put some music on not that loud to start with but must be at the max now. Music started off ok - think top 40 but for the last hour it's been rap music Nikki Minaj amongst others with lots of swearing and sex references!

It has totally spoiled our afternoon and think it's really inconsiderate of them! We live in a very family orientated area ! (The couple in question are mid 40s kids left home).

What should I do? My husband won't knock on the door because he says it's not unsocial hours! Is it being unreasonable to ask them to turn it down or put something else on? Got a feeling the party will go on all night - putting the kids to bed in a hour or so!

Unless they're really nice they won't turn it down yet - I assume it's 5.30 where you are?

I'd probably ask if it got past 10pm as most people are at work/school tomorrow.

I'm sure it's annoying for you, but people will be along to tell you how annoying it is to hear DC shrieking and playing in the garden!

I'm with your DH. If it's not every weekend it's not unreasonable.

YANBU to be annoyed at them. Some people have no consideration for others. However YABU to potentially ask them to turn it down. It's not unsocialable hours etc. FWIW I have a 10 month old and would feel the same in your position

I'd grin and bear it really.

6.30pm is very early to ask people to turn their garden music down.

I wouldn't like very loud, crude music either but it's getting towards the end of the day so I'd call time on my time outside if it were me. The good thing is that with your children being so young the references will probably go over their heads.

You could ask them to be careful about their choice of music as little ears are listening, but I wonder if they'll care because I would have thought they could have worked that one out for themselves. And if the alcohol is flowing I don't know how much they'll be able to consider the suitability of the music they're playing.

Ok I guess I will resist the urge! It's literally on so loud my walls are shaking!!! It must be on the absolute max volume wise!

Ffs! Oh well going to attempt to put the kids to bed now Hmm

If you are wound up by Nicky Minaj at half five, I think it's going to be a long night for you OP lol

Are DC going back to school tomorrow? If so YANBU to ask they turn it down.

Yes coco my eldest is back at school tomorrow!

I honestly don't mind people having music on but it is so so loud! I think part of my rage may be coming from sleep deprivation with my youngest but even so!

If your walls are shaking and you think it's on maximum volume, yes to knocking on the door (although will they hear you?). I get that it's early in the evening and a nice sunny day and all the rest of it, but there are still regs about noise volume. There's still a threshold at which it becomes a nuisance.

Nicky Minaj doesn't seem like the usual music choice of a couple in their 40s though. Are the kids back and the parents away maybe?

It is unreasonable.

Why should the OP's (and her other neighbours) have their enjoyment of a sunny Sunday afternoon be spoiled to that degree?

Just because it's not 1am it doesn't mean that they can make that much noise.

I think at 7pm, if the very loud music has been on for a long while, it's perfectly fine to let them know you're trying to put very young children to bed. It's up to them what they do about it.

They just might not have realised that the noise carries so much.

Play them at their own game, crank up the Daniel O'Donnell, leave it on repeat and head to the pub for an hour or two Grin

I had this, it actually went on late at night too. In the end I knocked on their door, he said he turn it down but ended up happening again but not as bad as before.

They have moved out now (thank god) but I live in a very quiet area too so I bet wasn't only one upset about the music. A letter actually went out to all the residents in the area about respect to music etc so couldn't been only one complaining

Ooh, yes. Daniel O'Donnell, bit of Johnny Cash. Some Texas fiddle music...failing that, Christian Pop :)

You must have thin walls my walls are thin and I can hear most things from next door. It doesn't bother me as it's not their fault and everyone deserves a bit of down time in their house.

It's still going on although now they've changed to 80s music? They have a very eccentric taste in music!

This is the first time it has happened but I just wish they would turn it down just a little! How long do I leave it before I politely knock on the door?

You could do it now. It's 8pm.

Noise has to be turned down between 11pm - 7am. 3 more hours left.

The Noise Act 1996 states that the hours of “night” are 11pm to 7am

Do you get on well with you're neighbours if you do knock on the door.

Plus there is no such thing as too loud for Wham.

80's YABU.
