AIBU in thinking this was really rude and upsetting

I live in a small village and I have two pugs, Poppy and Rosie. Rosie had an accident which resulted in her getting her eyeball perforated which meant I had to make the decision whether to have an extensive operation to rebuild her eye or a quick operation to remove her eye.
At the time the vet suggested that removing her eye would be better because she was so tiny (She weighed 2.5kg) They didn't expect her to survive and told me to expect the worst. She survived and is thriving!

Whenever I walk them its not unusual for people to ask to stroke them (Apparently pugs are an "in" thing right now)

During this mornings walk, Two middle aged ladies approached and started talking to me about my dogs. Then one of them noticed that Rosie was missing an eye. She then told me that I was cruel to let her live like that, I said She has no other health problems at all. That I would never be able to breed her, I said I have no intention of breeding her. That there was no point in me having her because she wasn't cute anymore, she looks disgusting and I should of had her pts. I said She is beautiful the way she is and walked off.

I'd have expected it from a child but a middle aged woman, She really upset me. Was I cruel to choose to remove her eye and not put her through reconstructive surgery?

Background: I have depression which got worse when I lost my staffy last year. My pugs have made me feel loads better, they aren't just pets, they are my companions.

Some people are just judgemental idiots. She sounds vain and idiotic.
There is nothing wrong with your gorgeous dogs. You made the right choice.

Please do not let complete idiots make you feel like shit over their unreasonable comments.

Ignore them - silly old bags. I have had a 3 legged cat and a 1 eyed horse called Captain Jack who both thrived. Animals are amazingly resilient and some people are just rude and ignorant. You did a brilliant thing for your pug.

The idea of having a pet pts just because they're not 'cute' is idiotic. That woman was rude and stupid and you should pay her no mind at all.

Your dogs are gorgeous, and missing an eye is just part Rosie's life story.

Anyone who would put a healthy animal down because it's no longer cute needs to be put down themselves. For what it's worth I think Rosie is very cute!

TheCricketWidow Sat 04-Jun-16 16:32:09

No she was rude and I would have found her comments upsetting too. Ignore, your dogs are gorgeous- both of them.

I'll never understand some people.
I wouldn't have thought being one -eyed has too much of an impact on a pet dogs life. Much better to be a pampered pooch than PTS.

We had a dog who developed glaucoma and had her eye removed she lived a happy life.
What an idiot woman to suggest you had a perfectly (otherwise) healthy animal pts because she Ionger looked perfect and cute.

Rosie is gorgeous! Horrible woman.

honeylulu Sat 04-Jun-16 16:36:53

Maybe you should have asked her if her husband is going to have her put to sleep now she is past her prime and no longer "cute". Rude and shallow! Pets become one of the family!

Your dogs are beautiful- you are totally nbu. It was rude to comment as this woman did. Well done for caring for your animals so well and for staying strong after the loss of your previous dog. Put her unkind words out of your mind- give the dogs a squeeze/ bonio and make yourself a nice cup of tea -- without the bonio!

Wolfiefan Sat 04-Jun-16 16:38:24

She was bonkers.
You did what the vet suggested was the kindest and best treatment for your beloved pet.
Your dogs are gorgeous BTW!

Princesspeach1980 Sat 04-Jun-16 16:40:16

Stupid woman, Rosie should have bitten her ankles for being so bloody rude! And why couldn't you breed from her (if you were planning to), losing an eye in an accident is hardly genetic confused

SmellOfPythonInTheMorning Sat 04-Jun-16 16:40:57

Aww they are beautiful! Fellow pug lover here. I know many one-eyed pugs, it is not uncommon because unfortunately their bulgy eyes can easily be scratched or perforated. They are all perfectly healthy and happy. That woman was incredibly rude and ignorant. Rosie has a happy life!

Ilovewillow Sat 04-Jun-16 16:50:52

You were perfectly right in your decision which was obviously also the view of the vet! This woman is a fool and bloody rude - ignore her ramblings!!

WhatALoadOfWankers Sat 04-Jun-16 16:51:00

There are no words for that level of stupidity and nastiness
Your dogs are beautiful

BigcatLittlecat Sat 04-Jun-16 16:52:07

Not often lost for words but what a madam! Imagine having to live with her if that's her view! Your dogs are gorgeous!

memyselfandaye Sat 04-Jun-16 16:52:19

I would have asked if she would want put to sleep if she lost an eye? Ridiculous woman.

Cunties Sat 04-Jun-16 16:52:20

Beautiful pugs!

Cunties Sat 04-Jun-16 16:52:58

I may be biased wink

tryandtryagain Sat 04-Jun-16 16:54:19

What an awful comment to make. Your dog is lovely.

VocalDuck Sat 04-Jun-16 16:55:31

What an awful woman. Yes, she was rude and I am not surprised you are upset.

I have a one eyed cat who is otherwise perfectly healthy and has been fine without her other eye for about a decade. She is still absolutely perfect and I bet Rosie is as well.

Andylion Sat 04-Jun-16 16:58:04

Those women are dicks. Your pug is beautiful. smile

RiverTam Sat 04-Jun-16 17:01:24

Personally I can't bear pugs, but that was dreadfully rude and unnecessary of her!

AddictedToCoYo Sat 04-Jun-16 17:01:53

The woman sounds mad. You can live a perfectly happy and functional life as a dog with one eye, WTF is she on about? confused

And while I accept you have no wish to breed from her, if she lost her eye in an accident and she wasn't born with a genetic abnormality there's no reason why she shouldn't be bred from either. The woman is a total loon.
