just because i'm a home owner, like all types of culture, hate junk food, don't smoke, but i don't go telling all and sundry, how to live or how my because i like culture and national trust stuff , not everyones cup of tea but that's fine, family not exactly rolling in money and live within our means - not always easy, i chat to anyone and most people would say i'm happy to help out with baby sitting, pet sitting etc, but my neighbour reckons i'm a snob because i listen to jazz and she has heard in my garden. i don't play my radio very loud at the best of times.
she is quite miserable and complains to everyone who will listen about life, weather immigrates the lot. not bothered if i am a snob, rather be happy than not.

for liking jazz? Nope. Your neighbour has the issue here, not you.

I think 'jazz' to some people = classical music. thats seen as being 'snobby' by some, unfortunately

Yes demented, how does op sound 'condescending'?

I always thought a snob was someone who thought they were better than others and looked down on people.

Really? Listening to jazz makes you a snob.

I like opera and classical music as well as Sisters of Mercy, certain punk bands, blues and rock music and some other stuff. What does that make me other than someone who likes a variety of tunes.

I have no idea if you're a snob, but I understand what Demented means, your OP does make you sound as if you're quite please that your neighbour thinks you're a snob.

Not a snob at all.
Your neighbour has a chip on her shoulder

I don't think being a snob has anything to do with what you enjoy, how you speak or what you eat etc.
It's more to do with how you view or react to people who have different opinions or lifestyles or values to you. You don't sound like a snob but your neighbour seems to be fitting nicely into the judgmental cow category.

I used to get this from some of my friends, because I like reading and watching documentaries and was into different hobbies. Seems so pathetic written down!

In hindsight it was completely their issue, they were projecting. It was almost as if they were accusing me of thinking I was above them, before I had a chance to think it myself. Like it would hurt less if they said it first - a type of self protection?

I also think they were just ridiculing what they didn't understand. People can be very funny about others breaking away from their perceived normal. We were all from a deprived area, not many opportunities etc and I think they thought I had ideas above my station! We've completely grown apart now.

Just my thoughts. Take no notice OP. Don't let anyone ruin your enjoyment of the things you love.

I think OPs post could possibly have been read as condescending as she lists things that would generally be considered belonging to a slightly more wealthy section of society.

It isn't snobbery though - having these things do not make you a snob. My mother was a terrible snob: it was always rather embarrassing!

Interestingly the true hoi polloi (sp?) will mix and mingle happily with anybody.

Oh god she should grow up, I used to get this at school because I didn't have as much of a local accent as the kids who picked on me (raised there and proud, just less string because my parents were from elsewhere) and I read sometimes at breaks, that made me a snob apparently...some people don't know what the word means. Her need to pigeonhole people according to music and supermarket is her pathetic problem, she sounds trapped as a 12 year old to me.

You don't sound like a snob at all!

I understand snobbery to be looking down on people (as a pp explained). It actually has nothing to do with what you like, what you have or how wealthy you are. It's an attitude - much like your neighbour's attitude, in fact.

You could be dressed head to foot in expensive designer clothes and that still wouldn't make you a snob. But the person making value judgements about the person in those clothes would be a snob regardless of their own possessions.

A snob for listening to jazz? Neighbour is being ridiculous.

Being a snob is nothing to do with what music you listen to, hobbies or even social class.

It is to do with looking down on others because they are not like you.

Your neighbour sounds like the snob here.

Sounds like reverse snobbery from the neighbour to be honest. She is looking down on you/judging because you like something that she considers 'too posh'.

I think Jazz is utterly ghastly but it doesn't make you a snob.

You are not a snob and she is a chippy twat. It's not your fault she thinks you are better than her, it's hers.
