It is a 39, a 38 is a size 5.

aha! i think a 6 is a 39 apart from weirdo marks who have a 6 as a 38.5

Anyway they JUST fit so I don't think I will return

I'm a 6, it's a 39 European.

Usually 39, but a generous UK 6 might be closer to a EU 40.

38 is a size 5.

I recently saw a shoe size saying size 39 was 5.5 on a website though and 39.4 was size 6. Might have been Superga but am not absolutely sure what website I was looking at. I remember thinking it was odd.

I usually buy either shoes in EU 38 or 39, I'd be a UK 5 or 5.5.

I don't think the two sizing systems match up completely - if there were such a thing as a 39.5 that would be a UK 6.

I work in a shoe shop that sells a lot of European shoes. It's a grey area. I have seen a UK size 6 marked as a 38.5, 39 and 40.

It is really down to the manufacturer and what they choose to convert it as and it seems none of them can agree.

I used to work in a shoe shop for a long ol' time and it took me ages to realise why there's so much inconsistency between european and UK sizes.

Basically, the difference between 2 European sizes is a lot smaller than 2 UK sizes (e.g. the difference between 38 & 39 is smaller than 5 & 6) so they just don't line up - and most brands just round to the closest.

Unfortunately, a european 40 is pretty much dead on a UK 6.5 which is what throws everything out - it can be pot luck as to which fits better.

So, after being no help at all, I'd say try the shoes on before buying, and if you're buying online, factor in time to make an exchange if you have an event coming up!

They don't match up very well. 38 is a 5, and 42 is an 8. But that leaves 3 euro sizes for only 2 UK sizes in between.

Most places seem to have 39 as 6, but sometimes 40 is instead. If got google it you'll get loads of different answers.

Basically you need to try them on ....
I'm a 38 in a birkenstock and a 40 in gabor.

39 is nearer 5.5 IMO. My feet usually fit 5.5, sometimes fit 6, nearly always fit 39.

I think they have changed in recent years. I always used to wear a 5½ or a 6, but as WhoKnows says, a 39 used to always be OK. But I was recently in a shop (Deichmann I think?) which had 5s which were a 38 and too small, no 5½ or 39s, and a 6 which was a 40 and too big. You could tell they just didn't do the 39. I was puzzled as when I were a lass 40 = Big Feet.

I agree with PP - usually a 39, but it really depends on the shoe. I'm a 41, which is often described as an 8, but a British 8 is definitely too big for me; I need a 7.5 if it's a British made shoe. An 8 is a 42, but when my daughter was a size 42 the sales assistants used to say, "Oooh, we don't go up to a 9." A 42 is not a bloody 9!
I'll stop ranting now.

If they're just a tiny bit tight, Punch shoe stretcher spray works pretty well.

That's weird balloon slayer I thought it was the most popular size (the "mode" if you like)

Size 40 fits me perfectly, it is 6.5.

'Adjustable* my sister is an 8 and used to get that all the time. Drove her up the wall!

40 is 6.5, at least I am a 6.5 and a 39 comes up too small usually.

I am a 6.5 -7 depending on the shoes. I usually buy 40. I bought 39 pre kids when I was a 6 - 6.5

Bought DS1 new trainers today at 39/6.

Apparently most manufacturers get round the problem by stopping boy sizes at 38/5.5 and starting adult sizes at 41/7.

Fuckers.
