Aibu to be annoyed neighbours snake was found in our garden?

This afternoon we were greeted with this visitor (pictured) in the garden. Turns out when we asked next door it was there and has been missing for 2 and half weeks and had last see it going under there decking. I'm frightened of snakes, we also have a baby ,a toddler and a 7 year old.

Am i unreasonable that they should of informed us it was lost and that they would let a snake (regardless if it's a pet snake) roam freely outside and end up in someone else's garden. The thought of my toddler picking it up not realising it was real or it going near the baby or 7 year makes my stomach turn.

I'm guessing it escaped and wasn't free to roam. I hate snakes but this really isn't a man eating Python. Surely your baby and toddler aren't out without you? What harm would it really inflict on a 7 year old? I'm guessing the snake would be terrified of any noise.
Not sure if they should have told you. Not a bad idea but it does sound like you would panic.
Hopefully it will never escape again.

Yeah, they should have been making some effort to find their pet (you'd think they'd have signs up and be going round doors - did they not care it was missing?) but your phobia is making you a bit unreasonable with regard to the harm the snake could do in your garden. It's harmless.

It's not the fact it's not poisonous it's the fact that young children could of come into contact with it. Surely a heads up so we were aware it was missing.

Though to be honest if my 6 year old walked into the house carrying it I think I would crap myself and climb the chimney?

I thought snakes carry salmonella? I am out with them but even so can take second of my back being turned.

Looks like a harmless corn snake but I can see why you'd be upset.
FWIW it couldn't do you or the DC any harm, and to be fair the neighbours probably thought it wouldn't be seen again. If they'd told you and it never turned up you'd be worried until you forgot about it?!

The chance of a snake giving you salmonella are absolutely minimal, even if you licked it, so try not to worry about that

I think it really does matter that the snake is harmless to people.

There's no need to be rude it's not necessary. I never understand why people feel the need to be on MN. Some people have genuine fear of snakes and I don't expect to find one in my own backgarden where my young children play!

A heads up would of been nice and the fact they seen it go under the deck suggests they let it go outside.

If the snake was venomous the neighbours would require a license to keep it as a pet, and inform the authorities should it go missing. The license stipulates such stringent controls on keeping venomous snakes (security if the vivarium and room) that the chances of an escapee are tiny.

Harmless accept when a toddler grabs it and it bites the toddler. Not deadly but can still hurt someone. Neighbour should of asked around and made people aware.

Yeah as said it looks like a corn snake, all it could possibly do to any of you is slither away!

I get that you have a phobia, but I doubt they let it go on purpose. Snakes are notoriously good at escaping and if it had snuck out and was living under their decking it isn't like it would be easy to catch it. For all you know they tried!

Maybe they should have given you a heads up but surely all that would have done is make you worry?

You do know we have native snakes? I remember finding grass snakes in fields as a kid, they can't hurt you either!

I have a snake, hes gorgeous, friendly and totally harmless. If he escaped i'd be combing the area till i found him.

I cant dsay YABU or not though tbh, you having a fear of snakes makes a massive difference. If i had found that snake i'd have hooked it (or at least tried), bagged it (in a pillow case) and held it till i found who it belonged to. You're afraid of snakes so obviously wouldn't do that.
