Don't want to sound ungrateful but dh is notoriously bad at choosing presents. I mean really bad I get car mats for Christmas a Katie price book for my birthday ? I have never shown any interest in her ? Last year he bought me a blue Pandora my bracelet is pink so I swapped it and he moaned. It's my birthday tomorrow and Dh is already bitching I've kept the receipt for your present as u will exchange it pfft I never moan about the rubbish stuff he buys me i put on a big happy face for the sake of the kids when inside I am thinking wtf how can u possibly think I would want that lol. But as I exchanged my Pandora bead 5 months ago for one that matched my bracelet he's already being a pain making snide comments that obviously i won't like what he's got me. Was I wrong to exchange it ?

What's the point of keeping something you don't like/want/need? Waste of money.

This would actually seriously piss me off. Why does he keep doing it? If he knows he has form for buying shit presents, and is so convinced that this latest one is so bad that you'll return it then why get it? Does he not know what you like? Does he just not care? Confused.

Why not just ask for pointers, or even give you the cash? I'm the least materialistic person I know but I would much rather receive nothing than a present that smacks of "I couldn't be arsed putting some effort into this", repeatedly.

Personally I would've done too - I think if someone has spent their money on something for you and you don't like it it would be a shame to not wear it or waste it because you don't like it. YANBU. I can understand your husband feeling a little hurt but surely it's better that you have something you like. I really hope he's got you something you like this year though as can imagine how he'll be (mine would probably be the same ha). Needs to stop with the snide comments though. Happy birthday for tomorrow x

Why don't you just tell him what you want? Or set up an Amazon wish list or something?

I always just ask people what they'd like for their birthday. Or I suggest something to them and ask if they'd like it. It really isn't a big deal.

i drop hints of what i would like and to me it's more about the kids giving me a present so they learn to give to others and I have graciously received many a shit gift but it's the snidely comments tonight I can't be doing with I exchanged a bead 5 months ago so it matched my obviously pink bracelet so why is he being a pain in the arse tonight about it. I could totally flip at him that he puts no thought into anything I only get Mother's Day presents because my sister buys them for me I am not his mum apparently and the fact that he has probably spent more on beer this week as he's off work than on my present but I won't like I said it's more about the kids helping me open my presents and learning to give to others but he's ruining it all before its my birthday for no reason

Mildred I totally disagree. It's nice to buy presents but at the end of the day, the person you're giving it to has to live with it. If you get the wrong thing or whatever (like the OPs Pandora bracelet) then it's a waste of money.

I would much rather someone tell me honestly (OK, maybe not
100% honest but tactfully at least!) that they like it but would they mind if I change it for something I love?

My DH is also bad at gifts but he does actually try. He just has very different tastes to me.

You're definitely not being unreasonable. I swear my MIL used to buy me crap gifts just to annoy me . She'd always say I've got the receipt in case you hate it which I usually did . Always things she would know I wouldn't like but she has got better over the years.

My husband is usually pretty great choosing gifts but I wouldn't hesistate to take something back if I didn't like it , otherwise it's a waste of money.

YANBU

This is about him not considering not thinking what you would like, frankly it sounds like little thought has gone into it at all.

How would he feel if you returned favour and got him something he didn't want?Wink

I'd be properly pissed off if someone persisted in buying me things I didn't want and then acted like a huffy idiot when I tried to exchange them.

Why doesn't he just bloody ask what you'd like instead of buying stupid gifts? Car mats and a Katie Price book? Fuck that shit.

Felicity sorry I meant that I would change it otherwise it would be a waste of money. Just read my previous post and see it doesn't really make sense (it was late! ;) )

He hasn't done to bad this year 2 lush bath bombs a cheap bunch of flowers and some sunglasses that my daughter chose for my holiday I can blame her for those they are huge but probably trendy but I have a really thin long face so they look ridiculous lol. Not great but better than car mats lol X

My ex 'MIL' got me a key ring for my 21st. I'd been with my ex for almost 2.5 years by that point. Some people are just really crappy at gifts. Hmm

The worst part was that I had to walk all the way to the collection office to sign for it.
