AIBU?

To be starving?

I'm trying to lose a stone and have started myfitnesspal app to do calorie control for a month and see how I go. I've never dieted before but ive just had 3 babies (in 3 yrs) and I found a love of cake in my second pregnancy.

Anyway, so far today I have had a bowl of porridge (decent size) made with whole milk, a big banana, a cup of tea and cup of coffee, both with whole milk. I am starving for the last 2 hrs! Surely that is a normal breakfast whether I'm calorie counting or not? I am physically hungry (growling tummy etc) and not just psychologically hungry.

AIBU to be hungry on that? Lots of people manage with no breakfast at all!

I think if you're used to eating more than that your body will be complaining.

It's a perfectly adequate amount to se you through to lunch, try a massive distraction!

Eggs are great for breakfast, they fill you up for hours.

Good luck!

Honestly if I eat porridge for breakfast I am so hungry by 10.30am I could eat my own arm. I'm doing my fitness pal too and either have eggs (omelette or scrambled) or plain skyr yogurt with fruit and some nuts in it.

Love of cake in second pregnancy that is me right now Grin

Porridge normally feels me up until lunch even when not counting calories.

What time did you have breakfast? If it was say 6/7am maybe have a piece of fruit around 10am as well to get you over to lunch. Or cope with the hunger for a few days and your body will get use to nothing between breakfast and lunch

Drink water and lots of it in between meals - it will help stop the 'hunger' pangs.

Porridge does that to me as well.

I eat eggs and cherry tomatoes for breakfast.

YANBU to still be hungry and getting your stomach to adapt to eating smaller amounts can make you feel like that for a while - have you tried calming your stomach with a glass of water?

YABU however for claiming you are starving. Thousands of people around the world ARE starving but since you have eaten this morning I can almost be certain you are not.

Ok, phew so it's the porridge. I'll try eggs instead....and a slice of toast and butter. I really want a big bowl of muesli but I discovered my normal amount was 4-5 portions so find it to depressing to eat a tiny bowl now. I'm not finding it too hard to stick to but am shocked at the level of hunger. I figure I was eating 3000 calls a day as totally normal. Too much.

I'm always starving by 11am whatever I eat.

Perhaps have a mid morning snack of a few nuts or blueberries.

It takes a while to get used to eating less but I find if I let myself get too hungry I go for the biscuits.

Porridge makes me ravenous! Which is weird, because it's supposed to be a 'filling' food. I find wholemeal toast and a couple of scrambled/poached eggs do a better job.

So yanbu, I'd feel the same.

the calorie content on the backs of cereal boxes is usually for 30g of cereal. I would naturally pour double that, so I don't eat it. It also makes me have the shakes by 11.30am if I eat cereal for breakfast.

I do 5:2 and have found that if I am hungry, a hot drink helps loads. Maybe try that when you get pangs until your body adjusts.

YABU. Eat some protein -- that's what stops you from being starving. At least 20g of protein in each meal and around 10g in each snack, and you will stop starving.

A diet where you starve is a diet that doesn't last.

There is no one answer to this.

What's a decent potion of porridge? To me it's 80-100g at least. But I eat about 2500kcal a day.

Also like op, if I eat porridge for breakfast I am hungry quite quickly. I save porridge for after I have been training at night. But I add flavoured peanut butter and other bits to it. It really helps me sleep.

If you are cutting down how much you eat, your body probably will protest.

Is 5:2 calorie counting for 5 days and eating what pleases you for 2? Once I get the stone off I'll maybe do that. But ultimately I hope to do no diet at all soon, just enjoy food again at a healthier pace.

I've just finished losing a stone of baby weight on MFP calorie counting, and my first three days were hungry, then I adjusted to eating my BMR calories, then two weeks in I went down to 1200 a day (unthinkable on day 1!) and that has been fine too.

Well I couldn't eat more than 40g of porridge in one go. I could eat again a couple of hours later. I'm a grazer I think I eat little and often.

I've felt much less hungry when I've based meals around protein and vegetables.

Eggs for breakfast is my favourite, usually with spinach and Philadelphia on granary toast.

Curren I didn't check the grams but I'd say it was around 100g. I'll check next time.

I find if I eat carbs for breakfast I'm hungrier faster. Try eggs.

I have 2 weetabix with skimmed milk and a banana for breakfast. Only have 1 brew in between with skimmed milk and then a bowl of strawberries and an apple mid-morning. I don't feel hungry until lunch due to my morning snack.

100g? That's 3 times the amount it says on the box!

That's a really carb heavy breakfast. No wonder you're feeling hungry quickly afterwards.
Agree with everyone who says protein keeps you feeling full for longer- usually on less calories too!
Lean bacon, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms would be a better option. Go for smaller portions of the carbs if you can.

Porridge always makes me hungry too.

If I have a plain flapjack at 9am it sees me through till 12:30 - 1pm.

This morning (9am ish) I had a pack of two BelVita breakfast biscuits at starting to feel a little peckish now.

I did MFP two years ago and lost 15lbs in three months. It's really good if you can stick to it.

Eating 100g of porridge seems like a lot of empty calories if you're trying to loose weight.
