AIBU?

To think this video is unpleasant? Baby delivering itself

This video is doing the rounds atm.

It apparently shows a natural c section, where the baby wriggles itself out.

I watched it and actually found it a little bit upsetting, it didn't look to me as though the baby delivered itself. The doctor appeared to be pulling the baby by his head. Then instead of giving the baby straight to is mum he seemed to be kept crying for much longer than necessary.

What is this all about?

Hmm, I know what you mean.

Why didn't the doctor just take the baby out properly (instead of yanking his little head around) and then hand him to his mum instead of holding him up and letting him cry. If I'd been her I would have reached out and told the doctor to give him to me. All a bit weird.

Poor little chap.

Oh I didn't like that. I don't think the baby delivered itself the Dr pulled him out. I kept thinking get that baby out and give him a cuddle!

Yes I thought it was a bit odd really. If it was my baby i would have wanted him out , wrapped up and cuddled much quicker.

It didn't deliver itself at all, so I'm not sure what the fuss is all about.

Just realised I've basically repeated what you said in a different way! So no, yanbu! 😄

I don't like this video, it seems a bit cruel

It's called a natural c-section. The baby wriggles themselves out - guided by the surgeon if neccessary - there's no screens, so the mum can watch. The process allows compression of the baby's lungs just as a vaginial birth would, which is aimed at reducing the issues c-section baies can ahve with mucous retained in the lungs.

I think it's fab.

That's what I thought Cutecat78 - bit of an oxymoron.

What's the theory behind letting him cry for ages without giving him a cuddle or wrapping him up like he's used to?

I've assisted at lots of C sections. It takes quite a bit of 'force' to deliver a baby by section - they certainly don't just pop out, and the delivery in this video is much gentler than what's typical.

I'm guessing that the parents requested delayed cord clamping and that's why the doctor continues to hold the baby up rather than immediately clamping the cord and passing him up to his mum. I'm not sure that the cord would be long enough for her to cuddle him as she can't sit up.

I had a natural cs after a crash cs and they're v different but they still need to pull and yes by the head. I couldn't reach DS while his cord was attached as it was too short so we cut it and then had to skin to skin. It was a lovely experience.

The doctor delivered the head, and then lifted it up to release the shoulders. This is actually much more gentle than a standard section, where there is much more tugging and pulling on the head. I agree with you though about leaving him to cry! I was pleased to see the delayed cord clamping though.

bit of an oxymoron.

Just a bit.

If the baby made the incision, I'd watch Smile

Sorry I hadn't finished! The doctor is checking the cord and waiting on it to finish pulsating before cutting - however it is a shame baby didn't go up onto mum while they waited for immediate skin to skin.

Don't think I'll watch it if the baby is left screaming. My poor second bub screamed in terror after she was delivered by c section. Must be a bit of a sock to the system! Although being born naturally (like my elder dd) probably isn't exactly fun either.

I felt a huge longing to cuddle the little mite when it was crying.
It didn't look like the surgeon was being very gentle with the baby, but I have no experience of c-section and I guess he was far more gentle than a squeezy trip out of the cervix and vagina!

I admit ignorance about it all.

It looked unpleasant especially with the baby not being placed straight with the mum.

I thought it looked horrible and I've had three sections!

I don't like the bit after the surgeon holds the baby's head up so the mother can see and then kind of just drops it back onto her tummy Sad I think he is quite rough but then I always think that Blush

Section babies are always pulled out by their head like that whether a normal lscs or a "nAtural" one. The incision is small and there isn't much space for the surgeon to get their hand in, so no other way of getting baby out.

To be honest if a midwife is doing a hands on delivery pulling on the baby's head is similar to that and how I was taught to delivery babies as a student, though I practise hands off approach now.

I think the lungs being squeezed similar to a vaginal birth is a load of bollocks and I have yet to see any evidence that this occurs. There is no contractions, no muscle squeezing for hours on end like with labour. The baby is being delivered yes through a small opening but it's soft tissue not capable of squeezing the baby's lungs. Though if anyone can find any proof for me I would be happy to be shown to be wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for natural sections if it's part of a woman's birth plan and makes them happy. But that baby would have been getting cold, needed drying and skin to skin and a cuddle!

I suppose it is as close to natural birth as possible ie the babies head comes out first and then the body. Is a bit strange though.

Report
WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 19/05/2016 13:45

The baby's head always comes out first and then the body, well 99% of sections they do. Only difference with this method is that it's a bit slower, baby is left half in and half out for a while.
