AIBU?

Expensive sunscreen isn't always the best

My friend and I were discussing screen (boring I know). I said that I use own brand or Calypso rather than boots soltan or nivea etc. I feel the ratings and quality are often same or better than the more expensive brands and I can also buy more for the same price.

My friend disagreed that she always used the expensive ones, as expensive means quality. She made me feel like I was putting cost before mine and DSS's health.

So aibu to think expensive isn't always best?

Expensive is rarely best. Anyone who thinks more cost automatically equals higher quality is an idiot.

I usually use ASDA own brand. Got some P20 last week and have had to throw away several bits of clothing it stained.

The cheaper stuff is just as good.

Quite often the cheaper ones have better star ratings for uva protection. Aldi has 5 stars, nivea and ambre solaire have 3 stars.

there were small tubes in Poundland today - didn't buy as didn't need any but seemed to have all the right certifications and stars on.

will get some next time the pocket bottle runs out.

I get Aldi children's extra sensitive factor 50, 5 star uva rating, it's less than £3 and doesn't cause mine or the kids eczema to flare up.

Some more expensive ones have a lower uva rating so YANBU!

It's like antihistamines, you can get exactly the same ones, just an own brand instead of a named brand, for a lot less, and they are EXACTLY the same! People pay for a name. I get 30 for £1.50, which is a lot cheaper.

Your friend sounds rather gullible to me if she's fallen for the expensive=better line than marketeers put out.

You know Soltan is the Boots 'own brand?' High factor own brand is fine for the UK, I buy whatever is on special offer. But when I am at work I use something different altogether. I work frequently in the Tropics and occasionally on the Equator, and the only stuff that seems to work to prevent my very pale skin from burning is Ultrasun once a day stuff. It is more expensive per bottle, but you only need to apply it once. I get so hot that other suncreams just sweat straight off but this one works differently. It is similar to P20 but it doesn't have whatever it is in the P20 that accelerates a tan while turning your clothes yellow!
