To ask how much and how often you drink alcohol?

I'm trying to cut back on alcohol for all the usual reasons: to cut back on calories, health benefits, save money...

Just as a barometer for the "norm" (and sheer curiosity) how often and how much alcohol do you drink?

EustachianTube Mon 09-May-16 15:25:13

I wouldn't say I'm the norm, but I drink hardly any. Probably averages out at 1-2 drinks a month? I almost never drink at home, only when out for a meal and even then I'm happy with just one glass. It's been tailing off over the years, I drank a lot more in my twenties!

6/7/8/9/10 blush morgans and coke once every 4/5 months.

Well, Last week I had:
A g&t after a shit day at work
A cider on Friday night
A cider on Saturday lunch
2 pints at Sunday lunch time

Most weeks it'd just be the midweek work sucked glass of something and a Sunday lunchtime pint, but the weather was cider in the garden weather!

I go to the theatre or ballet every Friday so I always have one large glass (250ml) of wine on a Friday night. It would be unusual for me to drink more than that in a week but if I meet friends for dinner then I'd have another large glass. I never drink at home unless it's a special occasion like Christmas. So I would say I drink 1/3 of a bottle of wine a week and never more than one bottle. I have alcoholics in my family, it puts me off.

SanityClause Mon 09-May-16 15:31:47

I rarely drink during the week. Only if I'm out. That would be one or two drinks (e.g. glass of wine or G&T).

I drink a bottle of wine over the course of he weekend, (Friday evening to Sunday) although sometimes there is a glassful left over, which I freeze for cooking. (In a plastic bag - it goes like a slushy, so really easy to use.)

I might also have another drink on the weekend, like a G&T or sherry or Pimms, but if I do, I'm less likely to finish my bottle of wine.

Foxyloxy1plus1 Mon 09-May-16 15:32:16

Since the beginning of the year, two small beers and four glasses of wine.

whois Mon 09-May-16 15:32:34

3 times a week on average. Probably 1/2 a bottle of wine on 2 of those occasions, and 1 large glass on the other.

Well I'm distinctly abnormal going by usual MN barometers, so let's completely skew the thread...

I only drink on social events if I'm not driving so that can be anything from once every couple of months to a couple a times a month (like this month because it's around my birthday) I'll probably have a couple of drinks - two large glasses of wine or bottles of cider. I dislike getting drunk intensely although tipsy is fine. I'd say this has been my drinking pattern since my mid 20's. I drink a lot less that pretty much everyone I know who isn't an actual teetotaller or my DH smile

SanityClause Mon 09-May-16 15:33:39

Sorry, should have said, I used to drink a glass of wine most nights, so two bottles a week, rather than one. I cut out the drinking from Monday to Thursday, when I decided to cut back.

blueskyinmarch Mon 09-May-16 15:34:14

OP. It has been my experience on MN that if you ask how much people drink on average you will get many many posters telling you they hardly drink anything ( which is fine) You are unlikely to get many coming on to tell you that they drink a bottle of wine a night ( although some may be honest). What I am trying to say is that you are unlikely to get a very accurate barometer of where your drinking habits lie within the norm.

x posted with a lot of people who drink a lot less than I'm used to on here!

Three glasses of wine a week on a Saturday night.

MissCalamity Mon 09-May-16 15:36:07

This month I have consumed 4 ciders on Sunday, then a bottle of wine over Wednesday/Thursday night.
Another 4 ciders on Saturday night, this is probably an average 9 days. I may have an odd weekend blow out every month but not much more than I have listed above as I am such a lightweight now & can't stand hangovers with kids!

BoopTheSnoot Mon 09-May-16 15:36:34

Everyone is very different, I haven't been drunk in years, last proper drink was on my wedding day (September 2013!). BUT that's because I found out I was pregnant with DS1 two days later; then all time was spent looking after baby, and currently 39+6 with DC2. My time will come again I'm sure!

Iamblossom Mon 09-May-16 15:38:03

Ok i'll start the honesty...far far too much.

I try not to drink on Sunday or Monday nights. Tuesday to Thursday 2 gin and slims, sometimes 3 but not usually. Friday probably 3. Saturday usually 3 gin and slims and maybe a large glass or two of wine as well?

However this Saturday just gone I drank probably 4-5 gin and slims, a bottle of Sol, half a bottle of Rose and 2 glasses of red wine. Felt absolutely shocking all day yesterday and still not right today.

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses Mon 09-May-16 15:40:52

I go in fits and starts. I went out for a meal on Saturday and I had 3 pints (classy) and 2/3 of bottle of wine. Last week I had a bottle of wine a couple of nights - but I'm going through a really sodding rough patch and I tend to use it as an emotional crutch/helps me sleep.
I can go weeks without drinking, or I can go days. It just depends on how I feel/what social occasions I've got coming up.

Pandakitchen Mon 09-May-16 15:42:27

Last week I had:-
Nothing Sun-Thurs
G&T on Friday PM
2 Large glasses of Red wine on Saturday PM
1 Large glass of White Sunday Lunch.

This week I had:-
Nothing Mon- Friday
1 large glass White Saturday PM with Dinner.

This or somewhere in between is about normal - last week was bit more than usual, however, sometimes go 2 weeks and have nothing. seriously craving a G&T now having thought about it

Iamblossom Mon 09-May-16 15:42:39

On the nights I don't drink I sleep much much better.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g Mon 09-May-16 15:44:20

I think I'm a moderate drinker but by the standards of those who've already posted I feel like a lush! Most weeks Mondays and Thursdays are alcohol-free days. On all other days I like to have a drink with a little snack while I'm making the evening meal and then eating it. I never drink after my evening meal and hardly ever drink at any other point in the day. I never binge - I can't, on the odd occasion I had more than the above to drink when much younger, I moved in minutes from feeling very cheerful to vomiting copiously and feeling like death!

As to quantity, I either have one (generous) G&T or I have a couple of small glasses of wine - maybe 125-150ml in total? Not often more. I would say that comes to 8-10 units a week.

Beepbopboop Mon 09-May-16 15:44:36

I binge drink occasionally blush which is very bad. But only 4 times in the last year.
I don't drink much as I don't like alcohol, just to get drunk.

storybrooke Mon 09-May-16 15:46:26

I usually buy a bottle of red a fortnight, dh will also buy one if he thinks I've been stressed or under appreciated every once in a while. Dh doesn't drink so it's just me usually sat in a facemask watching some cheesy series. That bottle will normally last 4 nights (although I had two glasses last night to finish it off.

Lweji Mon 09-May-16 15:46:27

On average, the equivalent of one glass of wine per month. Two at the most.

Sometimes a bit more, some months nothing.

Usually if having restaurant meals and I'm not driving (or a tiny bit), or rarely at home, maybe sometimes after cooking with wine.

has anyone accused the teetotals/occasional drinkers of jumping on these threads yet?

ItIsHowItIsx Mon 09-May-16 15:47:20

Share a bottle of wine with OH 3-4 times a week, an occassional G&T. Rarely anything else and always with food. Holidays we share a bottle most evenings. Trying to reduce.....

Winnetsthepoo Mon 09-May-16 15:51:18

I don't drink during the week. Friday nights DH and I share a bottle of wine then have two or three spirit and cokes.

Saturday night we have a bottle of wine each then five or six spirits and coke.

Sunday night we share a bottle on wine and have two or three spirit and cokes.
