In shops and supermarkets, you go to the till, you pay, you say thanks, goodbye, and then they say 'see you later'!! Why?? Are you coming for tea???

It just seems weird and lazy confused

MattDillonsPants Sun 01-May-16 14:00:40

Lazy?? Why? I say it because it suggests we are part of the same community! People might LIKE to think they'll see me later.

Seeyounearertime Sun 01-May-16 14:01:08

I know how you feel.

See you in a bit

Mrsmorton Sun 01-May-16 14:01:33

What would you like them to say? It's a polite way of ending a conversation.

There are far more irritating things going on!

CaptainCrunch Sun 01-May-16 14:02:05

It's neither weird nor lazy. Just retail staff making polite conversation, what a pathetic thing to get uppity about.

Toffeecrispy Sun 01-May-16 14:02:58

Lol i always say that, it doesnt make sense but is habit 😂

MiddleClassProblem Sun 01-May-16 14:03:31

Later could be next week, next month. It suggests the hope you come back.

FlowerOfTheWest Sun 01-May-16 14:03:46

YANBU. I wouldn't go so far as to say I get irritated by this, but I do find it a bit strange.

kaitlinktm Sun 01-May-16 14:04:11

It's the modern way of saying goodbye that's all. I quite like it - makes me feel I have a lot more friends than I really do and they might all pop round later for tea.

MrsSippy Sun 01-May-16 14:04:23

I'd like them to just say 'bye' or 'thanks', or even 'enjoy your day' (although that borders on unreasonable too), it just seems odd to say 'see you later' when they won't!!

sixinabed Sun 01-May-16 14:04:42

YABU. Although I do see the sense in your opinion, it is merely a colloquialism. There are many.

WorraLiberty Sun 01-May-16 14:04:45

It doesn't irritate me at all.

But curiously, what does irritate me is when newsreaders/TV presenters say, "See you tomorrow" etc.

Errr no you won't, unless you have a special weirdy, creepy, pervy 2 way camera confused

PortiaCastis Sun 01-May-16 14:05:20

Why get uppity they are just using a much used phrase. Now if they said piss off and don't come back, that's the time to be uppity

Ihatechoosingnames Sun 01-May-16 14:05:32

I always say it to everyone grin oh dear! I don't like saying goodbye to anyone because it seems so final and I find it almost morbid (not quite the right word but I can't think of another way of putting it.)

Alexa444 Sun 01-May-16 14:06:21

They probably will see you later. Most people shop in the same place each week.

MrsSippy Sun 01-May-16 14:07:58

Thanks Captain! I don't remember saying I got uppity about it, mildly irritated at best (although I do think it's WEIRD)

I do, however, find it ironic that you are defending polite conversation by calling me pathetic shock

EastMidsMummy Sun 01-May-16 14:10:47

I think it's a northern thing for "See you later" to mean "see you again at some yet to be determined time" rather than "see you later today", which I always expect it to mean.

JeanPadget Sun 01-May-16 14:12:52

I have choosing names is right. People say it because it seems less final than 'goodbye'.

What gets me is staff saying, "Do you have a loyalty card at all?". Why "at all"? Either I have one or I don't! (I explained this to a man once, many years ago, & XH said I was lucky not to get decked. I just inwardly fume now)

acasualobserver Sun 01-May-16 14:21:37

Perhaps you should seek clarification from anyone who uses this phrase? You could say something like, "If you mean by later some future but unspecified time then, yes, it is very likely that we shall see each other later. However, if you are using later to indicate a point later today then I fear you are in error."

CremeEggThief Sun 01-May-16 14:25:15

YABU. It's just another way of saying goodbye.

Lifeisontheup2 Sun 01-May-16 14:28:19

YANBU, but then I hate people saying 'I'm good' in response to the question How are you? I'm not asking for a rundown of your moral state ffs. grin

OptimisticSix Sun 01-May-16 14:31:03

I prefer see you later alligator... But that might be due to too many kids smile

CaptainCrunch Sun 01-May-16 14:31:05

You're welcome op, SEE YOU LATER.

limitedperiodonly Sun 01-May-16 14:32:56

I say this all the time. I once said it to the priest who conducted my mum's funeral.
