AIBU?

Scrabble sabotage

Tell me honestly - would you find this annoying?

So, DH and I were playing Scrabble last night. Bear in mind that in Scrabble, if you can use all your tiles in one go, you score an extra 50 points. If you can do this a couple of times in one game, you're pretty much guaranteed a victory.

I made the first move.
DH intimates that he has a hand which only needs one extra letter on the board to be able to use all his tiles - thus scoring the bingo - so decides to miss his turn, hoping said letter will appear.
I put down another word.
The letter that DH needs is still not on the board, so he voluntarily misses another go.
This continues for several more rounds - me playing, him missing his go - until its clear that the letter he needs must be one of the more obscure ones, as there are now loads of vowels, Rs, Ds and so on, on the board.

We got to about round 12 before I finally said I'd had enough and couldn't be arsed to continue playing Scrabble by myself. Even if he'd scored his extra 50 points at this point, he wouldn't have caught up with me, so he was just digging his heels in to be... what? Annoying? Stubborn?

So I then went to bed and played Scrabble against a computer on my phone Grin

Was I BU?

I don't think he really wanted to play Scrabble.

YABU as your DH plays scrabble with you, albeit half heartedly.

My DP refuses to play scrabble with me as he never wins

Yeah, a bit. But so was he! Wink

He bloody loves Scrabble! We play it all the time - often at his instigation.

In fact, this was the second game of the evening. He won the first bastard

Come over to mine, GinThief, I'll play Scrabble with you Smile

But only if you play it properly!

I thought if you pass your go three times in a row, you forfeit the game anyway?

YWBNU.

Yes, I think Salmon is right. (Or is it that if all players skip twice the game is over?)

Anyway, we don't discuss 50 point bonuses in our house anymore, since DH opened the game with "runtier" (as in more of a runt than...) I was more than unimpressed when the scrabble dictionary confirmed it was a word.

I think we actually brought a travel scrabble set on our honeymoon

The number of passes isnt in the rules but most tournaments will say that the player is out of the game after 3 consecutive passes.

YADNBU. That would irritate me.

I can no longer play Scrabble with DH and his family because they take about half an hour to make each move. They do then usually win, because they are much better at long-term strategy than me, but we could have played three games at a normal speed in the same time!

AntideluvianCat · 28/04/2016 12:15

Well, that is MOST interesting.

When I flounced off, he said "so you're conceding the game to me then?" (With a smarmy smirk)

I will very much enjoy telling him about the 'three pass' tournament convention

For anyone who's interested (and I know you all are), we are currently playing a "first to a hundred games" series. Scores currently stand at 78 (me) / 33 (him)

Smug, moi?

When telling him about that I suggest that you also quote Blackadder

"Gloating is a sign of insecurity [DH], stop it"

Report
Bogeyface · 28/04/2016 12:19

And you stop it too :o

What was the word that he thought we would win with?

Report
AntideluvianCat · 28/04/2016 12:23

I've no idea

But he had Poet and Opine in there (I checked after he swore blind that he literally had no other possible moves on his rack)

That was crap Scrabble play.

I Love a bit of Scrabble. I just broke my word point record. I scored 185 with a word on 2 triple word squares. I tend to annoy people by using the odd 2 letter words like AY, BI, QI, XI etc.

Tell me more about this online scrabble! Dp doesn't play (he is mentally bereft of scrabble knowledge) , but I don't have Facebook if it is one of those things? I do have an iPhone Grin

magoria · 28/04/2016 20:21

No one plays with me any more. Sad

I got lucky once and got waltzing.

It used all my letters so 50 point bonus as well as going over 2 treble word scores. Grin

Aha, I'm sorry to say but your DH was suffering from a well known condition called 'bingo'itis'. There are two main types of bingo'itis , one is when you have a bingo and you have to play even when you know it's not actually a sensible move and The other is when you have a bingo but can't play it so miss a turn even though it's not a tactical decision.

Unfortunately, your DH was suffering from a rarer and more irrational variant of bingo'itis where the player is awaiting for a particular letter. That's just bonkers. I'm not sure there is any cure.
