Posting it here as I don't know where else to and think everyone needs to know as its magic!!!

I get ear infections ALOT...every few months for past ten years at least. Usually outer ear infections that cause ear canals to swell shut and sometimes eardrum has burst because of pressure. I usually end up with multiple doctor and hospital visits with different drops / antibiotics/ steroid creams / wicks and weeks and weeks before it clears...then I read a tip somewhere awhile ago that if you put a bit of Vicks vapour rub on cotton wool and then that into your ear, it clears the infection up. Roll on last Friday and ear flares up again, was becoming more and more painful and Saturday I unearthed the Vicks an decided to give it ago...and by today it's already cleared the infection!

Thanku for the tip. Couldn't have come at a better time for me. My ears are completely congested and my left ear is almost completely impacted too. Back at work today but feeling rubbish. Currently using olive oil drops and decongestants to try and clear it but not improving. Will def give this a go later on.

Have suffered with ear infections/perforated eardrums all my life. Took until my 20s to discover that mine are usually caused by irritants in shampoo etc getting into my ears. Even different water will do it. It causes excema inside my ears (don't get it elsewhere) which gets infected. I now out Vaseline on cotton wool and put it in my ears before bathing/showering. Haven't had to use antibiotics or steroids for about 10 years. Grin

Brilliant Astrid!! I literally have had cotton wool with the magic stuff on in my ear for a few hours each day and overnight and I'm so amazed at how quickly the congestion has gone! I can hear again!!

Santa.. Yup I think it's shampoo and excema that triggers mine, will try your tip of Vaseline and cotton wool in ear whilst showering xx

Its not the vicks per se - its the moisturising/barrier effect. I'd suggest not using vicks as the essential oils may cause irritation with time, but e45, aqueous cream, hypoallergenic lotion etc. works well - I just apply vaseline intensive care moisturiser daily. Its usually related to ear canal eczema which is actually v common and if you keep the eczema at bay then infection can't get into the skin

Cool tip OP, will try next time! We do something effective too but takes a few days to clear. We make a hot compress out of a folded sock and boiled water, hold it against the skin behind the ear lobe. This relaxes and opens the tube that is swollen and stopping infection draining away from behind the eardrum... And then we massage that area in circular motions or long strokes down the neck. Only for about 10 mins at a time. You can really feel the tube opening! Works quicker than antibiotics for me and try and avoid them if possible.
