To think actually most children don't have plain black or brown t shirts?

DC are both in a school production next week.

School aren't asking us to make elaborate costumes, (which I am very grateful for!) Instead, they are making a big point about making things easier, so parents have been asked to provide a few "simple things that most children will already have at home".

DC1 needs plain black leggings and a plain black t shirt, DC2 needs plain black leggings and a plain brown t shirt. Brown, what child has a plain brown t shirt!

AIBU to think that those are actually quite unusual colours for plain t shirts? I am struggling to even find any in the shops.
I don't mind making a bit of effort for a costume, but I find it a bit galling that I am having to trawl the shops, and will probably end up having to buy plain white t shirts and dye them, while school has assumed everyone would have these things readily to hand.

Hands up if your child has a plain brown t shirt and where on earth did you get it from

eBay is your friend - search for child plain T-shirt brown and you will find. Same for leggings. We've had to provide black, brown, white and orange over the last few years and there's always some available. Most of the sellers seem to seek a rainbow of colours so if you buy everything from one you save on postage.

H&M is good for black. For brown I think my local market stall would provide, but I agree it's annoying and you wouldn't want to reuse the brown one.

I hate those letters. Your child will have the at home. Even plain white in the middle of winter for a nursery sized child is hard with little notice and nothing available online to be delivered in time.

Be careful if you end up buying on ebay, some of the cheaper clothing comes from China and can take weeks and weeks to be delivered.

I think plain black is pretty standard, my dc always had/have them boys and girls alike.
None of them suit brown really, but paler browns my eldest usually has one or two.

Yes, we have a brown tee-shirt. Bought because DS1 was a brown crayon in the school assembly. Got it from over the road in a random polyester filled market stall.

They may not be what all kids have lying around at home (mine have loads of black but not brown) but they are at least cheap and easy to get hold of which is why teachers tend to go that way rather than ask parents to buy expensive stuff or make things.

I teach drama and have sent out a costume list just today which includes plain teeshirts of various colours (including brown!) as the base for quite a few of the costumes. (wondered if this thread was about me for a sec but this production is weeks away! )

I can't insist that parents provide the costumes and just ask parents to email requesting me to get the costume for them if they're struggling. That's fine but what I often find surprising is just how easy and cheap it is for me to get the items which a parent has told me they are unable to do. Though I do source almost everything through ebay and amazon - for parents who don't or can't do online shopping (doubt that applies to any in my school though obviously could be wrong) I can see it could genuinely be difficult.

We have asked for similar in the past, colour often depending on the exact role. We try to keep it simple and, although children may not have the exact colour, sometimes they can work round it - and if not they are generally cheap to buy and def cheaper than most fancy dress type outfits. We do seen suggestions out as to where they can buy from if they need it.
