or is selling a t-shirt with Myra Hindley's face on it completely out of order?

Society 6 are selling this. I know it's art. I get it. But it's also total shit, and completely out of order. I've even tweeted it (first tweet in about a year). So cross.

ToucheShay Mon 25-Apr-16 13:13:50

OMG. Completely out of order.

Who are Society 6?

Liska Mon 25-Apr-16 13:14:55

Never heard of them before - they're an online company. Saw a post about this on fb, and now have the rage.

araiba Mon 25-Apr-16 13:15:13

did they force you to buy it and wear it?

SurferJet Mon 25-Apr-16 13:15:35

I'm sure these companies do this sort of thing on purpose to generate ££££ of free advertising.
I'd never heard of Society 6. I have now, so have millions of other people.

DownInThePark Mon 25-Apr-16 13:15:37

Disgusting! Who in their right mind would even wear it?

Fratelli Mon 25-Apr-16 13:15:54

Ugh disgusting.

Liska Mon 25-Apr-16 13:17:38

It seems that they work with artists to place their designs on products, and then the artist profits from the sales. But there is a difference between an image in an art gallery, and on a t shirt. This normalises something that should remain shocking.

Teddy1970 Mon 25-Apr-16 13:18:23

Who in Gods name would want to wear a picture of a notorious child killer on their T shirt?

Liska Mon 25-Apr-16 13:25:04

araiba ha ha far from it: as a middle aged boring person, I'd be very bad advertising for their product! I'm not disputing anyone's right to buy and wear clothing with whatever art they want on it, but this does make me angry, and I am asking if my immediate visceral ire is a reasonable reaction, or if I'm being ridiculous and it's just a picture. But I get annoyed about real life murder being used for commercial purposes (films etc) even when it's far in the past, so I may be being oversensitive.

Cheeseburglar Mon 25-Apr-16 13:25:20

It's not art. It's disrespectful to murdered children and their mourning families.

Liska Mon 25-Apr-16 13:27:32

Cheeseburglar yes that's where my feelings come from: there were real victims, and there still are real people mourning. Just not right.

SweetieDrops Mon 25-Apr-16 13:29:10

Suppose it's a good early warning sign, if someone is wearing it you can assume they are a massive attention seeking twat and avoid them like the plague.

acatcalledjohn Mon 25-Apr-16 13:31:56

YANBU. That's is absolutely vile. You may as well wear a t-shirt with an "arty" picture of the Wests. Or hey, why not glorify Hitler whilst we're at it hmm

Their entire marketing department need a lesson in marketing. And the designer needs a serious slap.

Pepperpot99 Mon 25-Apr-16 13:33:13

Dreadful - that woman murdered children, some of whom have not yet been found sad. It's actually disgusting.

liz70 Mon 25-Apr-16 13:34:23

"You may as well wear a t-shirt with an "arty" picture of the Wests. Or hey, why not glorify Hitler whilst we're at it"

Chairman Mao, anybody? no, wait, that's already been done.

PPie10 Mon 25-Apr-16 13:36:07

Yanbu, what the shock that's just sick !!

ZsaZsa1954 Mon 25-Apr-16 13:43:28

I've just emailed them and asked WTF they think they are doing. I'm old enough to remember the Moors murders and using this woman's face on anything is just beyond sick. I bet it's some young art student who doesn't even know who Hindley was and what she and Brady did.

Stanky Mon 25-Apr-16 13:59:01

It annoys me to think of how many people gave this product their seal of approval before it ended up on the market. Someone had the idea, and went to the trouble of having them printed up. Disgusting.

BillBrysonsBeard Mon 25-Apr-16 14:01:41

I must admit as a teen most of us don't think about the awful things serial killers have done and just want to be cool so would wear something like this without thinking. I've seen teens drawing swatstikas on themselves, taking selfies at Auschwitz, wearing t-shirts with Charles Manson on. As an adult I think it's disgusting.. These people shouldn't be worn proudly. Adults design these for impressionable teens to wear and they should know better.

Bearlyknitted Mon 25-Apr-16 14:03:23

It's a ton of publicity for them and my inner cynic wonders whether this was part of the plan. I only saw it when it appeared on "Get in the fucking sea" on FB. I'd never heard of the company till then.

Marketing manager of Series6, you're a cunt.

Bearlyknitted Mon 25-Apr-16 14:06:47

Society6 rather!

BillBrysonsBeard Mon 25-Apr-16 14:11:07

Yeah Bearly, I've only recently realised the extent many companies go to get their brand circulating, I was naive!

YaySirNaySir Mon 25-Apr-16 14:15:32

Vile.
Shame on society6. I know who they are which is a good thing as I wont be buying anything from them EVER.
HTH

Liska Mon 25-Apr-16 14:16:59

O.K. Just to clarify: the original drawing is by a guy called Paul Nelson-Esch (it's part of his 'modern portraiture series'. Society 6 have put it on t-shirts, sweatshirts, throw pillows, iphone covers and a tote bag.
