I'm horrified at the news of looters (small group) stealing from the London Marathon water station at Deptford! Some adults are using their child's pram to carry all of the bottles they're taking.
What will people do next year if this goes unpunished? Steal the runners' phones and trainers as they go past?!
The London Marathon Event Manager has said it will be investigated.

Don't know anything about this. You'll always get your opportunist thieving bastards though in an event like this.

I saw this via FB and wondered how low you have to be to steal water...in a country that has no shortage of it

No! That's unbelievable.

YANBU! I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to tell you that the poor souls can't afford thier water bill but given the number of them I would find it very hard to believe that most of them are just opportunistic thieves jumping in on what everyone was doing

Sorry I have worded that completely wrong, that sound be aren't!

Really very common. I've maned water stations/lucozade stations at Great North Run on many occasions and at the lucozade station has a police guard and they have their work cut out for them with people trying to get bottles.

Really, Earbud? That's terrible!

I saw this as well via FB. Shocking. Some people really have no morals at all.

On the plus side, out of the 40k people taking part I actually saw my mate on TV this morning!

My understanding was that they were told they could take it as there were only stragglers left and they were clearing up the course. You can see the water station volunteers in the video not saying a word.

It's London I'm suprised it's not been filmed before in all honesty.

The volunteers have been instructed not to intervene to avoid any fight, which is very wise. The thieves were stealing, not helping out!

Report
Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2016 20:17

My understanding of it is they did it when only the first lot of runners had gone through and the volunteers were told not to get involved.

Whatever the truth of it the racist comments on the FB video made me feel sick.

I ran the Edinburgh marathon years ago (2009) some of the water was stolen from the course before the race started - I think they might have put palettes out at the stations the night before. It was Scotland's one hot day of the year and it was horrendous for runners, especially in the back half of the pack. I stopped and refilled a bottle at some public loos along the course - the amazing folk with houses on the route also came out with buckets of water and hose pipes from the garden for us for which I will be eternally grateful.
I am no longer surprised at the depths some people will stoop too and the contrasting amazing loveliness of others.

It was pathetic, they were piling up as many crates of bottled water as they possibly could and stacking them on to trolleys. It reminded me of those videos you see of shoppers on Black Friday desperate for "bargain" items they don't need.

It's water Confused we're not that third world a country that water is a valuable resource. Just get it out a tap.

sparechange · 24/04/2016 20:30

You can see that the course is nearly empty, and those coming past are walking, so it would have been when the last few stragglers are coming through, rather than in the thick of the race. So no runners went thirsty because of it.
Anyone walking at the Deptford bit of the course isn't on for any sort of record...

My guess is someone realised it was the very end of the race, and they started nicking it, others saw and joined in.

The volunteers, one of which is in a scout uniform, stood back rather than get involved in a fight over water.

But yes, it is ridiculous. They are teeny bottles and it isn't like there is any issue with the tap water

googling this produces some links to some websites you would not believe...

the other story going round is that the runners had all gone through and that the water was therefore available to anyone who wanted it as the organisers weren't going to collect it. If that's true it is the organisers that need a long hard look at themselves.

so let's hold fire, shall we?

and who steals bottled water???

It was 1.15pm at Deptford which is at Mile 8. The majority of runners would have passed through Deptford at around midday.

If you were only up to that stage at 1.15pm (running 22 minute miles) then the marathon would have taken you about 9 hours. The time cutoff is 8 hours.
