About four weeks ago I called in to my local PS to put some petrol in my car, I rarely use this PS as it's very expensive. I normally fill up at my local Asda.

I bought £10 worth of petrol - just to see me through till I could get to my normal filling up place. I also bought a packet of crisps.

Came up to £10.39, I paid on my card.

The following day I went in to asda and half filled the tank up.

My Dh used the car and didn't bother to replace the petrol so one week later when I got in the car it was basically running off fumes so I called in local PS and put another £10 in. When I went in to the PS shop the owner went in to the back and came out with a receipt of my last transaction. He said that last time I was in the card machine was broke for one hour and did not register the petrol amount/cost and I only paid for the crisps. The recept he had shown 0.39p he was quite relaxed and said he was just showing me. I offered to pay it back. I only had £10 note on me so said I will Bob in soon and pay it. He never once asked for it. Seemed relaxed about it.

Went home checked my online banking - yep the 39p from the PS was there.

I totally forgot to go to the PS the next day or for the rest of the week. It's not in the direction I normally go and I'd been asda and put petrol in so I didn't need to go local PS.

Anyway - today I went in as me and Dh have been sharing again and not replaced so had to call in local PS to put a little in just to get me out of the village. When I went to the pump it wasn't working. I went in to the PS shop and Bobbed my head in and said ' is the pump not working?'

The owner said 'I turned it off as you owe me £10'

I said ' oh god yes, I'll pay it now'
He said ' yes but you let me down. You said you would pay next day' (I never)

I said ' Ok, I forgot, but will pay now'

He carried on saying "yes but let me down, where was my money'

I said " hang on, I tried paying buy your machine was broke, I never stole it, like I said I'll pay now'

He said ' but you let me down, you said you would pay ...

At which point I walked out of the shop.

There were people in the shop and I felt he was trying to act as if I had purposely stole petrol or tried to get out of paying.

Not sure what to do know tbh.

Should I expect the police to come?

I think I'd probably take in £10 and tell him you won't be using his PS again. I would also make sure I got a receipt.

You'd checked your bank, and you do owe him the money.So firstly it would probably have been helpful to take it in as soon as you'd checked, but fair enough if you hadn't managed it, the next step would be to go in, with apologies, and give him the money.

In the first place he acknowledged that it was the error by their machine and he still let you have petrol and still let you leave with a promise to pay soon. Now, you need to pay up.

I offered to pay when he reminded me - twice . But he was still having a go at me, repeating him self. I felt embarrassed as if he was accusing me of stealing when I had tried to pay originally

He was a bit OTT by repeating himself so much, but imo that's all he's guilty of.

Yes yabu. You should have paid up as soon as he told you. The police will be contacted I would imagine. My dad was questioned once for not paying. He had and someone else had driven off the petrol station owner wrote down his number by mistake. He was interviewed twice but luckily a work colleague was in the petrol station at the time and backed him up.

He was probably pissed off that you made no effort to pay him for a week and only tried to pay when he cut off your supply.

"Yes, I forgot, I've said I'm sorry. Are you going to let me pay it or are you going to stand there repeating yourself like a stuck record? Up to you."

I would have taken the £10 in a soon as I knew about the error.. If it's your local PS it can't be far away. But I hate owing people money.

There's a limit to how much you can legally pay in pennies - check that first!

If the transaction showed up for the 39p that you paid by card for the crisps, it indicates that the person on the till didn't add the fuel to the bill which would make it their error as the machine must have been working to allow the transaction for the crisps to go through

I don't think you are being unreasonable, it wasn't your fault the machine was not working. If you hadn't gone back in he wouldn't have been able to ask you for it and would have had to accept the loss or try to claim back of the bank. He was wrong to have a go at you. I would have left the money but never used them again.

I have run a small business on tight margins - but I would not have plagued a customer like this for something that was not their fault in the first place.

I would have written the £10 off and been glad it was only a relatively minor amount. I would have tried to be more careful myself in the future when taking in payments.

If I were you if avoid going back there seeing as they're making such a song and dance about it and kind of accusing you of pulling a fast one on them.

I would pay the £10. I'd send him 50p a week for the next 20 weeks in an envelope and never use the station again.
