AIBU?

Personal calls in the office

Work in a small open plan office 3 of us here manager doesn't often work from this site.

We all get on well. When me and one of the ladies are here we get on with our work and chat a little bit. One colleague chats a lot more to the point it's sometimes difficult to get on - she entraps you into listening to "monologues" rather than a two way conversation.

She also spend hours on her mobile phone (while writing up notes) chatting to her mates (usually telling them how to run their lives), while other colleague and I work in silence.

AIBU to find this annoying, rude and also a slight invasion of privacy for the person on the other end of the phone who is unaware there are two strangers being forced to listen to one end of the conversation?

Yanbu. Speak to her about it, or mention it to your manager

Oh YANBU.

My dad calls me at work often, especially if my mum's out. He's 86 and the older he gets he seems to get worried being alone even for a short time. It's just a two-minute "all fine" thing and my boss is fine with that.

Your situation, however, isn't.

YANBU. I used to share an office with someone very needy who needed about 2 hours of informal counselling every day. Admittedly I was training as a counsellor at the time so initially made use of it (mistake). I couldn't get any fucking work done. You could speak to your manager, but wouldn't she know it was you?

YANBU

she is the reason why some companies have to treat their staff like children and ban mobile phones and private phone calls during office hours.

I would ask her nicely to take her phone outside. I even had a boss like that, so I couldn't really moan. I ended up changing my working hours to be able to get some work done, it was ridiculous. It didn't last long.
