AIBU?

To just want to be able to buy my dd some age appropriate clothing?

My dd is 10yo so she's tricky to buy clothes for as she's in between kiddy and more teenage clothes. She likes to be comfortable whisky playing in our street with her friends so tends to wear jogging bottoms t shirts, shorts etc but she also likes her dresses, skirts and jump suits for when we are going out and about.

So today I'm shopping for her some summer clothes. Usually she comes with me but we go away in a weeks time and she's in school so I need to get her some stuff. Anyway I went into every shop imaginable ie Next, New Look, H+M, Tammy, Zara and all I came across were cut off belly tops, shorts that were that short they could only be described as hot pants, bra halter neck tops and tops with inappropriate slogans.

I do not want my dd who is only in year 5 to be walking round with her belly and backside hanging out simple as that but clearly a lot of parents do not mind as they wouldn't sell these kind of clothes. I realise my dd is growing up and pretty soon she won't even let me chose anything for her and that's absolutely fine but for now I buy and shop for her clothes and I just want to be able to go into a shop and buy something nice but ahe appropriate.

I see it all the time, girls my dd age, sometimes younger wearing clothes that quite frankly look to small for them ie bums practically hanging out of their shorts/leggings. Belly tops that show their crop tops/bras etc and I think it's awful. I don't except my dd to want to wear Minnie Mouse jumpers or anything like that but I expect with all the shops on the high street these days to be able to go in and not come out empty handed. So am I somehow being unreasonable about this or does anyone else with dd's feel the same?

You have the internet at your fingertips.

Of course you can find clothes that you/your dd will like.

Or did you just want to hoik your judgy hot pants up at what other parents let their DDs wear?

I don't have a dd but I'm a teacher and I dread some of the 'own clothes' that some girls turn up in. When I clicked on the thread I knew that belly tops would be first on your list, they are like an epidemic. Yanbu in the slightest.

Yanbu. Twas ever thus though - I can remember my own mother complaining about the same thing 30 years ago! There is a terrible gap between little girls clothes and the much older style teenage/young adult stuff. I don't want to dress my dd like some weird overgrown 6 year old but some of the stuff I see in the shops/on the street frankly turns my stomach! I have the added problem that my dd is tall and has grown out of most of the upper sizes of childrens lines and I really struggle to find nice stuff.

I'm on Next's website a lot and you are talking nonsense. There's loads of different styles.

My dd (12) wanders round the shops really sad that all the 'fun' and 'comfy' clothes are too small for her. She lives in leggings and logo less t-shirts and plain hoodies. She often chooses stuff from the boys range rather than have the fashion girls range. YANBU IMHO!

Well I've been online, eBay and to the shops but I'm struggling to find anything that isn't babyish so like Disney or for a 16 year old like I said belly tops and short shorts. Boys are so much easier to shop for and I don't have any trouble shopping for my 14yo son. And I'll be honest with you I do judge really young kids (or should I say their parents) who are allowed to leave their house dressed in the clothes I've described. They look far too young to be dressing like this and to be honest we all judge, anyone who says they don't are lying.

I guess your H and M carries very different stock to ours. I was in ours today looking at clothes for my DD, she's 8 so just into their larger age range, and I saw lots of decent stuff. Plenty of loose fit patterned trousers, jeggings, dungarees, full length playsuits and longish dresses. There were some short shorts, but I don't remember seeing any crop tops (which isn't to say there weren't any) I did see lots of regular length T-shirts and shirts.

I love Next and have shopped there since my kids were babies but in the girls section it seems to be either full on Disney and frilly dresses or really old teenager stuff and my dd doesn't like either. She does like the shorts from there and the shoes and she had a few of the thick winter track suits as well but she needs some summery but smarter clothes and I've struggled to find anything from there.

My DN is 9 and could we get her out of her belly top and "cool" jacket and into a sensible (for the weather) top and coat? Could we fuck. It was all hair flicking and whatever.

I buy them stuff from next - they seem to have stuff that is on the boundary. It covers them up but they think it's cool enough! So I bought her skinny jeans and a long sleeved t-shirt with "New York" on it in black sequins ( she's never been...), a black play suit and silver fake fur coat and she was happy with that sort of thing.

It worries me more that she's already talking about being fat. Honestly, there's more fat on a racing snake, she's like a twiglet, but she and her classmates are all worried about being fat..

My daughter is 11 and I've not seen anything you're describing. Next, Zara, H&M etc are not bursting with hot pants and belly tops as far as I could see last weekend..

Sounds like my dd gleegeek lol. She likes to be comforting and loves her leggings and track suits but she's at the stage were she sometimes wants to dress more fashionably like her friends but has told me herself she doesn't like the cut off tops and hot pants type shorts.

My 10 year old takes age 13 in clothes. I buy size ladies size 6/8 jeans from Primark and cut them to MY decreed shorts length. They're only 6 quid. Some t sets from Primark Ladies are ok too. But I feel the same, some of the clothes are awful, and Next is vile for tha age group too.

Johnnie B is best but not cheap

Well I suppose it depends on areas and what stock each store has but today it was all I came across. Primary was the absolute worst though. Not only was the older girls section filled with crop tops and teeny shorts they were all neon pink and yellow with slogans (but daft ones). It's just not nice clothing for young girls imo.

Have you tried Sainsbury's clothing range? They have lots of nice tshirt shorts sets and not a crop top to be seen.

Oh know I never thought of sainsbury's to be honest. We haven't got one on our doorstep but I'm sure there's one in the next town. Definitely worth a look..

I found similar with DSD who is the same age as your DD. We went shopping a couple of weeks ago as she has out grown all of her clothes. We settled on a couple of pairs of jeggings and a couple of pairs of 'hot pants' with leggings to wear underneath. Tops wise I managed to find a few longer t shirts (tight ones) with emojis on in primark and she did pick a couple of shorter tops which we bought some strapped vest tops to go underneath. Not ideal for hotter days as she will be wearing two layers, but no skin on show! She absolutely refuses to wear dresses and skirts, so I'm going to have to look for some three quarter length trousers or longer shorts to get her through summer.
I have found supermarket clothes are better than high street ones for decency levels.

I have got age appropriate clothing from H&M, Although we prefer primark and peacocks.

DD still wears disney tshirts still which we get at primark. But they have lots of fantastic tshirts especially when they cross over into small adult sizes . Not top quality of course, but good enough to last out while she is growing.

I have a 10 year old daughter so sympathise. She is getting quite tall, and now fits a ladies size 6 in some stores. She lives in leggings, hoodies and tops and her clothes are a massive mixture of Fat Face, John Lewis, Matalan, Asda, Primark, New Look, TK Maxx, Boden and lots of hand me downs from older friends.

She does like the wee crop top things and I allow her to wear them for her dance class, but only with a vest underneath.

I was in New Look today buying stuff for dd (who is 14). Yes, there were crop tops (which dd wears) and shorts but also lots of jeans, leggings, long tops, hoodies, dresses. Plenty of choice.

In case anyone is interested I bought dd some leggings and some high-waisted shorts. That's what she wanted and she looks nice in them. She's not washboard flat in the stomach area but she's confident enough to wear what she wants. Good for her. And down with the OP and her thinly veiled pop at overweight children not dressed to her standards.
