Just read that she has been the victim of stalking for 7 years which only ended when the man broke into her flat in the night, entered her bedroom and tried to attack her.

Seems like she wasn't taken seriously by the police and they were more concerned by the fact it was a burglary than that it was someone who had been stalking her for years?

This is an issue that is very serious and affects a lot of women, I had no idea that this had happened to her and wanted to say I'm angry on your behalf and I'm sorry this happened to you and you weren't taken seriously? And I hope this helps raise awareness of how common and serious this is?

Shocking.. and the Police wonder why women have so little faith in them :(

Stalking is a crime for a reason, its shocking this wasn't taken seriously. Flowers

I read about this too. Apparently they had "disposed of the 2009 letters according to police protocol" when it became clear that the stalker was escalating by 2015 or whatever it was (I haven't reopened the article to check my facts). I think that's probably code for "we've lost them".
(2009 is a year, not the number of letters. Just to be clear.)

I'm appalled by this. It's a wonder people have faith in the police period.

Poor Lily - that is really shit treatment.

That is shocking. I hope the fact that's she's a high profile victim will shine a light on the shitness of the police response. It's frightening how little domestic violence and harassment is understood. Anyone who has spent more than 5 minutes working with abusive men knows that they are obsessive, possessive and they escalate. Poor woman.

I notice that's she's supporting the Women's Equality Party policy of establishing a Stalkers' Register - apparently it's often a pattern of behaviour rather than a one-off. Good on Lilly and the WEP.

Its horrendous. I saw something about this on good morning tv or whatever it's called. With the use of Twitter and what not a lot of celebrities are experiencing this, and few are being taken seriously. There needs to be a crack down, I can't imagine how frightened she must have been Sad

Terrifying, feel so bad for her. It's so disappointing that police still don't seem to take this seriously or gather all information (rather than taking each complaint as a separate issue). I hope this thread remains supportive and that Lily sees it.

It is awful for her. But she is brave to make it all public.

“I want some answers from the police. I’m a famous person and had the inclination to push things. If they treat me like this, how the hell are they going to treat someone else without those resources, without clout?”

Indeed.

Reading that article sent a chill down my spine.

Poor Lily. I had an ex boyfriend stalk me when I was 17/18.

He punched me in the face when I wouldn't take him back (after he cheated on me) - and it all went down hill from there.

This was 20 years ago, and the police didn't care then, even though we reported every incident.

I was terrified of him, he would write terrible letters, would follow me, watch my house at night. Then glassed my new boyfriend (at the time) in the neck.

He ended up going to prison for 3 months and still wrote to me after blaming me for ruining his life.

Wanker.

I read it too, and thought I might write to her with a few words of support, although, fingers crossed, it's all over for her now.
It was truly shocking to read how he just appeared in her house - scary as fuck, really. What a brave woman to have gone for so long with this in her life, and also brave to finally come out and tell everyone about it, as it will give other women support and hope too. On a personal level, it's given me a bit more strength to stand up to my XP, who's bullying me (in a very different way) at the moment, so I owe her thanks for that. That woman has a fanjo of steel for what she's gone through. Cake and Flowers and Wine.
