To ask for a mental health assessment?

This sounds bad/ mad I don't know but I think I need an assessment
I've realised I have traits of something I don't like and it's affecting me.

I'm paranoid ! I've started a new job and I'm convinced no one likes me. I think when people talk to me they think I'm stupid or they're laughing at the way I look. I don't want to go on work nights out etc because of this.

I'm suspicious aswell. I'm very guarded with people and won't answer questions or commit to anything. I feel like I don't want people to gather information and use it against me.
This isn't normal is it ?

I am not great at mental health things being a wreck myself but I would say that if you are not happy with your mental health then that it's itself warrants at least a trip to the gp.
So no you are not unreasonable

Yes see GP and let them figure it out, I have hypothyroidism and sometimes get like that if on too much medication so there maybe other explanations. Also B12 deficiency can cause these issues.

Thanks ladies. I've had all bloods done and they're fine. I just feel like I can't be arsed. I don't want to see my family because I just don't want to talk to them, my friends I find hard work. I'm starting to just hate people.

It sounds like you do need to talk to someone and your gp is the place to start. I find talking to my gp really hard and actually I think I have only ever said about 3 sentences to her about my mental health and yet it WAS enough for her to see I was really struggling and advise me to start medication which is helping.

What help did you get sock? If you don't mind me asking. I have been on anti depressants in the past but I didn't want to be on them my whole life. Maybe I'm just shy ? Anxious? I don't know.

I am on antidepressants and also betablockers to help with the physical effects of anxiety. She also makes me an appointment every two weeks which I do get a little worried about taking up her time. But she just checks up which sounds really pathetic but it does actually help. I have still never talked to her about mental health really but it's obvious it's a problem and that seems to be enough!

It sounds like you have confidence issues tbh. Thinking no one likes you is probably because you don't like yourself that much? Sorry if I'm way off. If you don't think you're good enough then you WILL be paranoid in social situations, of course you will. If you liked yourself and had a bit of confidence then you wouldn't be going to work and thinking "no one likes me, they laugh at the way I look".

Thinking that people want to gather information from you to use it against you. Again I think this could be down to confidence. Why do you think you will be shit on by people like that. As if people don't like you or want to take you for a mug or screw you over?

It sounds like you might need a bit of CBT which your doctor can refer you for.

Have you heard of a website called Mood Gym? It's a CBT tool that therapists use to help those with anxiety and those who suffer paranoid thoughts, suffer low confidence etc.

Book an apt with your GP. Sorry your feeling like this though op. Flowers

You're not alone either!

Hi meg,

I work in the mental health field and regularly recommend these self help workbooks to people.

There are booklets, made by psychologists, for a wide variety of issues.

Going by your concerns I think one on social anxiety might help. It can be useful to learn about social anxiety, symptoms, causes and ways forward.

www.moodjuice.scot.nhs.uk/shynesssocialphobia.asp

What you describe can be really debilitating, if you go through the booklet and do not feel any better please go to see your GP.

Is this a new thing or have you been paranoid for some time ? I,m an RMN you may suffer with anxiety so u think you should see your GP if he does refer to the cmht though it may take a while to get an appointment unfortunately due to the massive cuts in mental health services.

Thank you ladies. I suppose my I'm guarded do to last experiences I've learnt to keep everything private. I actually know people who ask questions to gather information and interpret things and repeat them. I've been burnt more than once

I'm on beta blockers for a similar thing...not quite the same but similar. I get embarrassed easily, flustered, worry what people think of me, get v anxious about certain meetings etc. It's very debilitating but if I know I'm going to have an anxiety provoking day, I take a beta blocker. It stops me having that adrenaline rush that makes me blush/avoid speaking and helps me fulfill my job role. Sometimes I feel like a failure for having to rely on beta blockers but maybe that's just me beating myself up! So you're not alone at all!

Thanks. Im due to go out with work at end of the month so I'm going to force myself to go. I just find it hard as I struggle with eye contact too lol. It's funny because the other colleague I started with I'm really comfortable with but the others I just feel like their turn their nose up at me and I have no idea why !

Remember tgese are your internal thoughts, in reality, tgey are probably far to preoccupied with their own lives to be judging you , easy to misinterpret things, I know how it is though...as I said, I suffer myself but at times I realise it's in my head!

This sounds familiar, at the broadest level. I suffered from paranoia after being overwhelmed by big life changes. A trip to my doctor and a mild anti-psychotic (don't let that word freak you out) have sorted it out and life is now normal again. Good luck.

I felt like this to start with in my teens and after years of different tests etc etc I was diagnosed with depression and OCD. I'm on medication which has helped enormously but I understand that's not the best option for everyone.

I'd start by going to your GP and tell him exactly what you've said on here about how you're feeling and you're concerned and see what they say. It might well be that they investigate it and offer some counselling which can be great.

Hope you start to get to the bottom of how you're feeling.

I'm on day 5 of fluoxetine and feeling really rubbish. Making the anxiety worse. I'm seeing a councilor tom via the Babylon app as my gp hasn't said anything about referring me- was going to see how the session went then ask my gp if I can get it on nhs. Smile
