To have 20 month old in baby car seat (0+)

I don't drive and have been offered a lift by a friend this week for a day out. My 20 month old has an isofix ERF car seat in our family car. My friend doesn't have isofix. We have my DD's baby seat still which is a Britax baby safe group 0+. It says to use up to 13kg which is 12-15 months. My 20month old is only about 11-12kg and quite short so her head isn't over the top of the seat yet.

WIBU (or horrendously unsafe!) to use her baby seat tomorrow or do I need to go out and buy a cheap next stage up car seat?

Car seats don't have age limits, if she's within the weight and height limits then she will be fine x

The first car seat is the safest one there is. You will be fine!

She'll be fine. I had a small son and when he was 20 months (and under 13kg) he occasionally used my newborn daughter's infant seat if he was being taken out somewhere.

My 18 month old is still in her infant carrier!

When we went abroad when dc1 was 18mths we used the baby car seat for him as it was far less bulky and easier to carry on the plane. We left it at my grandparents house in Spain. He fit in it fine.

Woohoo, my first AIBU and IANBU! Grin

Thanks everyone! Fingers crossed she doesn't have a growth spurt any time soon!

I think the current guidance is to go by height rather than weight. So check the height restriction on your car seat and measure you daughter (laying down flat)

" My 20month old is only about 11-12kg and quite short so her head isn't over the top of the seat yet."

Given that she is neither too heavy nor too tall for it, she is completely fine in it!

WheresLarry · 14/04/2016 12:40

As long as she is within the weight limit and the top of her head is not above the top of the car seat then she will be fine. Her legs may look a bit scrunched up but that is okay.

It's down to whether or not her head is past the end of the seat as others have said.
