AIBU?

TTC and redundancy

First post. DH and I are TTC so ultimately I'm very conscious of the fact that I could become pregnant at any point.

I have worked for my current company for 5 years. We get the first 18 weeks of maternity leave on full pay and then drop to ssp for remaining weeks which I guess is pretty good compared with other companies. I work in an industry which can be very changeable and my company (global, US based) are currently undergoing major reorgs and several people have recently been made redundant. For the moment we're told that the redundancies will stop there but the threat of a bit out is looming. I live 1.5 hours from the office and we operate a largely 'work from home' culture and I only usually visit the office once a week. It goes without saying that my work life balance is incredible and I would stay here forever if I could.

I'm just so worried about getting pregnant and then being made redundant. I would get about £13,000 in redundancy because our company pays out on top of this in event of redundancy. I have tried asking HR but they tell me they have no idea what will be happening.

Aibu to worry here? In my position would you look for a new job incase I'm left, say, redundant at 26 weeks pregnant or whatever? Would you stay and hope for the best? Also how on earth would I get another job if I was heavily pregnant?

If you got made redundant and got a payout, take maternity leave and look for another job with the payout in the bank surely?

Though I think they have to be careful making a pregnant lady redundant.

Thanks for your reply. My plan is to save money throughout the pregnancy to be able to keep us financially sustained through my years' mat leave. We don't struggle at all financially (that is not meant to sound boastful) but we have a large mortgage and it would stuff up my plans if I were to lose my job, say early on in a pg or even mid way through.

And supposing I was made redundant, I wouldn't qualify for Mat pay if I joined another company would I? That's even if they took on a pregnant person in the first place!

You get a superb maternity package - many people only get 90% pay for first 6 weeks then get SMP

Do not leave!!!!!! You don't know you are going to be made redundant, if you left and started a new job you may have a shit maternity package which you aren't entitled to until you've worked there for something like 26 weeks

But that said, if you hate your job then leave as you have no idea how long it will take to have your baby.

Due to recurrent miscarriage, took me over a year to have a successful pregnancy. You just don't know what will happen.

If you love your job, then stay

Thanks so much. I absolutely love my job and it ticks every single box. I guess that's why I'm so panicky.
