Help! We accidentally served raw chicken at friend's party! WWYD and is everyone going to get ill?

DH grilled boneless chicken thighs wrapped in bacon, I assumed he'd cooked them properly! We added them to buffet.

At the end of the night hostess gave us a plate of leftovers to take home including some of DH's chicken (which everyone ate apart from 4 veggies).

This morning I ate one, it seemed fine, I bit into another and it was raw! As in totally raw Shock
I was so disgusted I was sick.

I'm so worried we're all going to get ill! Should I call the others and tell them? DH thinks it must have been on the edge of the tray and says the others were fine Hmm I'm so angry I can barely look at him. I'm OCD about food safety and always over-cook meat, he thinks I'm overreacting. Am I?

One of our friends was feeding the chicken to her toddler!

What should I do?

It's likely he is right about the others being fine, because people would have probably noticed.

Try not to stress...

If it was raw, surely people would have noticed and just discarded it? I'm always quite heck chicken is cooked before eating it at buffets.

ShockShockShock uuuhhhhm I have no idea but I'd guess that at least a couple of people might be unwell. Years ago in my work a woman made a curry and brought it in to share. 14 people ate it and
14 people had food poisoning Sad I did the accident/incident report about it. I hope your guests are ok!!

Thanks,

Yes hopefully people would have noticed if raw but everyone had a lot of wine before the food was served. Usually I check the colour of chicken before eating it but I was quite tipsy and just ate it.

I'm worried the other chicken might have been undercooked even if not raw Sad

This is my worst nightmare personified Blush - I too am so OCD about chicken - but I look and look at it so I'd say from my POV, if it looked raw, I wouldn't have eaten it. However, dunno how many other people routinely examine chicken like I do Confused.

Um, did you all eat it? How are you all feeling now? I've always been under the impression that raw chicken would cause pretty violent double ended evacuations within 4-6 hours but I know it's not always like that. How likely are the chances of all other thighs being OK but the one you ate being raw?

I don't think you're being unreasonable to overreact, like you said, one of them was raw. It doesn't take five seconds to do a quick check for cooked meat. I'd lose my shit, if I'm honest - there are very few things that make me got OTT but raw meat/food poisoning is my kryptonite Blush

Your dh is more than likely right the rest probably were cooked ok- fingers crossed.
There is nothing you can do now anyway

People wouldn't eat it if it's raw though would they?

(oh, I missed the bit about not being able to look at him - yeah, that's a bit of an overreaction, but like PP, he wouldn't have done it intentionally?)

The worst thing is they weren't even our guests it was someone else's party!

The outside looked cooked but the middle was totally raw, pink and slimy.

I just can't believe he could be so careless and not check they were cooked through!

you could send a quick message to ask if everyone's chicken was ok, that you are worried one or two might not have been cooked quite through. It might be the kindest thing to do.

I ate raw chicken at a bbq once when it was going dark and I didn't notice it wasnt cooked through, so it is quite possible.

Being so angry you can barely look at him is an extreme over reaction.

Being concerned about others isn't.

I really hate to say it, but campylobacter takes a few days before it hits you and usually is just the rear end.

But if the chicken isnt contaminated with it, then you can't get it.

OhYou, did you get ill?

It was in friend's garden and conservatory, by lantern-light, so quite possible we didn't notice.

He didn't do it on purpose did he so your massive overreaction to this is VU.

LilacIce · 10/04/2016 12:48

The chicken had been frozen beforehand, would that kill bacteria?

Well for one thing, stop over cooking meat. You're ruining it.

Chicken wrapped in bacon can look pink even though it is cooked was it definitely raw?
Nobody would eat raw chicken.

I did, but the others didn't :) I bear my friends no ill will, it was an accident that ensured that I am always more careful about checking what I am biting into..

I hesitated about posting because you probably need reassurance more than anything else. It is done now. It probably will be ok. You might feel better about having immodium in (always a reassuring thing to have in anyway)

I just googled - frozen chicken is less frequently contaminated AND less heavily contaminated, so that weighs in your favour a long way.

I'm sure you'll be fine and no I wouldn't contact the others. Your DH is probably right anyway.

Yes you are being OTT about it, but 'OCD about food safety'? You either have OCD or you don't. More likely you mean you are over cautious and anxious.

Whatamuckingfuddle · 10/04/2016 13:27

I shouldn't worry until someone gets ill. Obviously it wasn't on purpose so maybe just try and keep calm, make up with DH and next time you bring food to a buffet just make sure it's properly cooked or lace it with Imodium

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 10/04/2016 13:30

Don't mention it, it will only worry people and they will probably be OK. If they are ill there's nothing to be done anyway.
