I work in a small office ( 7 women all with dcs of various ages 2y-22y) we are all nurses and are lucky to get 6 wks a/l pa. we all get a week at Christmas and Easter and at least 2 weeks in summer. I have requested 21/2 wks a/l in August (1-17)as need to get back for ds AS results on 18th. flight leaves on Tuesday 2/8 returns midnight on 16th hence why need Wednesday off !
This will be my last request in 19 yr! for al during school holidays as my dcs are now 22,19 and 16 and this will probably be last time we are all away as a family. Over the years I have juggled childcare over the summer and know how awful it is, For years ( until 4 yrs ago) my husband and I shared the a/ l over the summer which meant we only had 1 week off together which usually coincided with visiting elderly mother in Scotland
1 of my colleagues is being particularly awkward about me having an extra 3 days over the usual 2 weeks ( there is flexibility in office for us all to have extra days over the summer anyway) she has just returned from her 2nd skiing holiday of the year , wants 2 weeks off in summer to go to Greece as well as extra week as she doesn't like sending kids (11 & 8) to summer clubs!.... I only had 1 week off in summer holidays last year so don't think it's too much for me to ask for this time off.....I've been asked to come in on Monday 1st August , day before we fly, .....there are 5 others in office that day so all clinics will be covered....btw I've been on my own this week because 2 staff on A/L and 3 off sick.....just doesn't seem fair to me?.... What should I do?

i wouldnt worry about what a colleague thinks just whoever approves your leave.

I would have said it's up to your line manager.

Line manager is best buddies with this colleague and she has asked me to come in on the Monday- even though I'm the only 1 off that week.....there will be 5 others to cover clinics .....

I'd go in on the Monday. Sounds like generous A/L and you can still go away with your family? Unless I've misread your post.

Is there a big problem with you going in the day before?

If not, you've got that on your side, your doing your best to cover what you can.

I wouldn't and never did get into discussions about leave, with Collegues, it isn't worth the stress or fall out.

If the leave that you've asked for has been approved, I'd focus on that.

Nothing to do with colleague, its down to your line manager and if they've declined leave for that day then there not much you can do.

I worked places where 2 weeks was the maximum leave you could take in one go unless if was something special (honeymoon/wedding/one off long-haul) and agreed well in advance as a one off.

The background of your families ages and your husband and you not having weeks together for years is irrelevant to your line manager, that's what happens when you have a family, work full time and don't want to use childcare.

I'd work the Monday.

I would also work the Monday, show willing and you get rewards at other times. And if there are 5 others in that day, you won't be there late to finish off.....

scotsgirl64 Sat 02-Apr-16 11:46:28

The previous 2 weeks , there are 3 members of staff off so there will only be 3 of us in on those seems to be 1 rule for me and another for everyone else....I've been on my own most of this week!.... And she'll most likely get a 3rd week off this summer as well.....I know we're lucky to get this a/l but it just seems to be whoever shouts loudest gets their way

ilovesooty Sat 02-Apr-16 11:48:19

If you think it's so unfair take it to your line manager's manager or put in a grievance. Only you know whether that is likely to be productive.

Birdsgottafly Sat 02-Apr-16 12:03:10

""And she'll most likely get a 3rd week off this summer as well..""

I'd ignore that bit and concentrate on you being on your own, on shift.

Otherwise it can look petty.

To be honest I would just work the Monday, assuming you've been off at the weekend then all packing etc could be done? Or is it a very early flight?

However, if you do genuinely feel let down over being left on your own on other days then you should bring it up through the appropriate channels, not via a tit for tat holidays row
