I keep reading and hearing apparent bafflement about this.

It's NOT baffling is it?

I hate when people do this Hmm

What even is Cultural Christianity? Which I am sure is the question you wanted us all to ask ffs.

Whycantweallgetalong · 20/03/2016 21:46

well what is it?

GooseberryRoolz · 20/03/2016 21:46

No. I think it's blindingly obvious what it is.

But thanks for illustrating the bafflement beautifully Grin

Are you really baffled or is it a political position?

(That sounds a bit more provocative than what I mean, but I can't think how to phrase it.)

If I posted exactly the same about Secular Judaism or Cultural Hinduism, would you still ask what it was and pull Hmm faces? Or not?

Are you all quite anti-religion anyway? Or anti-tradition? What's the root of the gripe?

Well what is it?

I'm guessing it either means "we're atheists who give things up for Lent" or "massive racists" or "atheists who want in on the whole Quiverful modern patriarch thing."

Totally agree OP. You can be an atheist but be from a Christian background, and therefore "do" Christmas and Easter (albeit in an entirely secular way - aka presents and chocolate eggs).

Is it just cultural Christianity that people have a problem with? Because I don't notice any sneering when people call themselves atheist or secular Jews, for example?

leelu66 · 20/03/2016 21:52

I'm guessing it refers to people who follow traditionally Christian customs and culture but aren't actually Christian i.e. get married in a Church, have a Christian funeral etc.

I THINK it's blindly obvious Euphemia.

It's obvious TO ME.

To the extent that I can't even begin to fathom how anyone , particularly anyone raised or resident in the UK or western Europe (as most MNers are) wouldn't recognise it, even if they don't subscribe to it themselves.

I know exactly what you mean by it and also think it's pretty obvious.

I also have no damn idea what you're talking about? Is it a new sort of "buzz" slogan?

Report
WorraLiberty · 20/03/2016 21:55

Oh, in that case it's not baffling at all.

The OP leaving other posters to explain what it means though...well that was slightly baffling Grin

OP we're asking what it is because we genuinely don't know what you're on about. its not a trick question, although I'm wondering about the thread now Hmm

Report
GooseberryRoolz · 20/03/2016 21:55

So I'm just asking - really politely - because I'm confused about how/why other people are confused Smile

We live in a Christian country so the culture, history and tradition is one of christianity.

Despite being irritated by your question I have had a look at Wiki and it was remarkably easy to find and understand the answer.

Cultural Christians are people who don't believe in God but still want to call themselves Christians. Everyone's at it one way and another aren't they? Big butch men calling themselves women, white women calling themselves black - there are no limits really and with that in mind I now declare myself Miss Fucking World for every year since it's inception, Mrs Mensa Genius of the universe, Bill Gates's wallet, The Duchess of Fucking Everything and an all round Damned Good Egg (if that's alright with the easily offended amongst us?).

What a load of pish.

Fuck me. The drama.

You only had to say what leelu66 said, so everyone is clear Confused

Okay. I've just read your post at 21:54:26, it seems your adamant we are all in the know. I'll leave the thread now.

I've never even heard the term before this thread, so I'm baffled as to where you keep hearing people being baffled about it.

I think I know what you mean by the term, but it's really not something I've ever heard anyone discuss.

I agree it's blindingly obvious and I read the earlier post where someone was called on the phrase and thought how stupid it's obvious what it means clumsy syntax there heyho
