Nursery not letting children in

Ok I am just looking others perspectives on this as to whether it was me or the nursery being unreasonable.

The back story is my dd's attend a nursery to which a pre school is attached. They attend the pre school for a morning session 5 days a week but in addition to this they have also been attending two days a week in the nursery for the last 3 years as we both work. We pay a small fortune for this every month and in addition to this all holidays, sick days etc are paid for by us too which we have just accepted.

This week however there was a bit of a misunderstanding. The girls were in preschool up until Wednesday and the nursery was closed on Thursday for St Patricks Day. This was one of our nursery days and a day that we lost due to them being closed but still pay for. However on Friday the nursery was having a party. Posters all over the nursery asking children to dress up and donate money to Sports relief. I ordered the girls two outfits at a cost to myself. We took the girls to the nursery on Friday all dressed up only to met at the door by one of the girls who said "Sorry preschool is closed today" So I had two children in the car all dressed up and looking forward to a party only to be turned away at the door because it wasn't their day. Do you think it was my fault for getting the day wrong or do you think the nursery could have shown a bit of leniency and let them in to a party for a couple of hours considering I had gone to the trouble of buying them outfits and left two small children all dressed up, disapointed and nowhere to go?

I didn't follow all of this, but there is usually a ratios issue to consider and allowing 2 extra children in may have messed this up.

I assume they were at capacity. Somewhere it should have stated it was for children that normally attend that day only.

Yabu as it wasn't your day and they may have already had their quota of children for the amount of staff they had. You can't just turn up for a party when it is t a day they normally attend

They had no obligation to let you in just because you had bought outfits for them so yes it's your fault they were disappointed

Sorry, I don't really understand? Did you think it was closed on Thursday, but actually it was closed on Friday?

If I've understood correctly then I don't think they were at liberty to let your children in.

Is Friday one of your usual days? If not YABU. You could at the very least have check if it was open to all, or just usual "Friday" children

Why didn't you check before buying the outfits and getting the dc excited?

shadesofwinter · 19/03/2016 12:33

I agree that if Friday isn't your normal day you shouldn't have assumed without checking that your DDs would be able to go. Sorry, I think YABU, not nursery.

Surely op wouldn't have just turned up if her kids weren't due in that day? Confused

Assuming Friday is not your usual nursery day I'm not sure why you took them in?

Or have I misunderstood?

It is a shame for your little ones - I wonder if it would be allowed for them to stay provided you stayed with them?

I'm reading that they normally go on Thursday but it was shut, so they decided to go on Friday instead.

They weren't being unreasonable OP, they may have been out of ratio.

Ah, I've worked it out. Your kids usually go to preschool there on the Friday but they told you preschool was shut and there was a party on only for nursery kids?

This is a reverse isn't it.

The parents were BU. If it wasn't their usual nursery session they shouldn't just rock up because nursery are holding a party.

Report
PuppyMonkey · 19/03/2016 12:43

They rocked up because they usually are in preschool that day but they got told it was closed.

Ah that makes more sense.

I don't think they were being u not to let them in - child to staff ratios etc.

But I do think they should have communicated more clearly to the parents.

My 18 month old attends nursery but not on a Friday.

Every party/dress up day/charity day are on a Friday, he doesn't attend on Fridays so he doesn't go. These are advertised all over the nursery, all the doors have posters about sport relief dress up, world book day etc

I wouldn't dream of rocking up and trying to drop him off for any of those days because he doesn't attend those days Hmm

Sorry puppy. My mistake.

So preschool closed for one random day? Without telling anyone?

From what I can see you seem to have two issues:

  1. that you've lost a day of nursery on the Thursday, though you knew about that, but also lost preschool on Friday and didn't seem to know about that
  2. because you felt they weren't clear, they should have let your DC in

If you hadn't realised preschool on Friday wasn't going ahead then possibly yanbu to hope they'd just let your DC in, as long as you'd accept it if they said it was a capacity issue. However if you had known preschool was shut on the friday then yabu.

I guess the question is - were children who only go to the nursery (not preschool too) but not normally on a Friday, invited to the friday party? It's a bit surprising that posters were up advertising an event that only some children were invited to, without anything on yo say 'friday nursery children' or whatever.
It doesn't sound like it was well thought through.

Did you know pre school was closed?

Is that the issue? They did communicate that?

Or that the nursery wouldn't take them on a day they should be in preschool?

My dcs nursery used to encourage us to take them in for parties that were on days they didn't usually attend.
also do nurseries in Ireland close for St Patrick day? Is it a bank holiday?

Report
Gileswithachainsaw · 19/03/2016 12:54

when Dds old nursery/pre school threw a party all kids were welcome to attend.

not right at all that they weren't allowed in
