Had a huge argument with a cyclist today and thinking about it, maybe i was wrong or was she? Let me know what you think...

Turned into a road which could only fit one car down and some cars were parked on the left, It is a road near my house and i use it often. A cyclist was coming the opposite direction. She was riding as if she was going to go into me, in my opinion she could of went on the pavement to get around me, the pavement is dipped in several places or waited on the side however she choose to ride right up to my car, bang on it and we started arguing.
I said to her she is not a car and she can go around me i cannot go around her because there is no room, she said i should of waited for her to pass.

who was right?

It is illegal for a cyclist to cycle on pavements. She was already present on the road and therefore took priority to you entering from a minor road. You should HAVE waited.

She is also right if she can correctly say "could have" and not "could of".

You pulled onto her side of the road rather than giving her right of way or waiting? You were in the wrong. She's not legally allowed to go onto the pavement and why should she wait when it's her right of way?

She shouldn't have banged on your car.

You were definitely in the wrong.
If I have read it correct with the cars being on the left, if it had been another car driver and not a cyclist they would also have had right of way.

We all make mistake and no one was hurt thankfully

Sometimes common sense needs to be used, would it be illegal for a car to pull up on a pavement to let an ambulance go by? or go into a bus lane to get around another car?
should a car not stop for a cyclist who is using a zebra crossing?
All these things are illegal.
Its not hard to use the pavement for two secs so a car can not be inconvenienced.
If a cyclist causes a car to crash which many have nearly done to me, they just ride away on their merry little way whilst my insurance goes up.
Cyclist think they own the road, they refuse to stop for anyone even traffic lights.

God forbid a car driver be inconvenienced. Hmm

You were wrong, the cyclist had right of way and you should have waited. Perhaps you should remind yourself of the rules of the road before your next drive.

She was another vehicle on the road and therefore had right of way. Just because cyclists are slower than cars doesn't give you the right to intimidate them into letting you pass first

She had the right of way. I'm a very non-cycling everyday driver.

You were absolutely in the wrong.

She isn't legally allowed to cycle on the pavement. You should have waited for her to pass, like you would have done with any other road user who had right of way there.

She was riding as if she was going to go into me

Nope. You were driving as you were going drive into her.

You were driving on the wrong side of the carriageway to overtake parked cars and expected the cyclist to swerve onto the pavement to avoid being hit by you.

YABVVU - I would have banged on your car too in these circumstances.

'Driving as if you were going to go into her' that should say.

You were in the wrong.

Why should they give up their right of way? Hope you'll come back to the thread and concede your fault.

@MartinaJ I'm a very non-cycling everyday driver.

Anti-cycling or don't ride a bike?

She was right as others have said and your ignorance of basic driving is very worrying. OP read the highway code ...properly this time.

You were totally in the wrong.

FindoGask · 18/03/2016 05:11

Yes, just to add to most people on the thread - she had right of way. In the highway code it says you should pass a cyclist allowing a car's width distance; the same applies when giving way, you should treat an oncoming cyclist who has right of way the same as you would a car.

Sorry but you were in the wrong but saying that i think all cyclists should be banned from all roads, entitled bastards.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/03/2016 06:52

You were wrong but its interesting that "its illegal to ride on the pavement" is being used in favour of the cyclist.

Report
Pseudonym99 · 18/03/2016 06:58

You need to treat a cyclist as you would any other vehicle. Just because they are a cyclist doesn't mean they have any less right to use the road, using the same rules, as any other road user.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2016 06:58

I would have waited for them to come through personally. Don't want a row with a cyclist particularly.
The time spent arguing the toss cancelled out any time saved not waiting for them.

Ughnotagain · 18/03/2016 06:58

What would you have done if it had been another car instead of a bike, OP?

Of course you were in the wrong.

Cyclists can be a pain in the backside. However, in this case, she was in the right. She shouldn't have banged on your car though.

Why's that bony ? You can't expect a cyclist to do an illegal thing just because some of them do? Loads of cyclists are complete knobs. But then so are loads of car drivers. I refuse to break the law whilst cycling or driving no matter how convenient it would be for me or other road users!!

Op you were entirely in the wrong and pretty entitled. Hopefully you can see why?

Report
DoreenLethal · 18/03/2016 07:04

If there are cars parked on the left, and another vehicle coming from the other direction, you would have surely waited so what is so different about it being a cyclist?

Report
Gabilan · 18/03/2016 07:04

It is illegal to cycle on the pavement tho interesting that a pp has said she should have done it whilst simultaneously coming up with crap about cyclists not stopping at lights. She was obeying the highway code. You don't even know what it is.
