AIBU?

To be annoyed I wasn't told about sickness bug.

I am absolutely terrified of sick, the thought of vomiting makes me feel very uneasy.

I domestic clean for clients, some of whom have children (as do I) however, I cleaned the house today - all 4 bathrooms, bedding. Only to be notified by text later on that the children had been vomitting all night prior to my arrival.

I feel so annoyed, surely it is really unfair not to inform someone, am I being unfair here?

Belle.

I don't think you are being unreasonable.

My sister also has a massive phobia of vomiting and if something like that happened she'd be a wreck for a good few days.

She could have given you a heads up.

Really don't think this is the job for me.

I'm a mess tonight, can't even eat my supper incase I'll be unwell overnight.

surely the kids were home though if they had been up all night? I wouldn't have pre told you but would have said when you arrived just to clean downstairs and the bathrooms that hadn't been part of vom fest.

No, the daughters had been to a play centre with their mum.

I was just like how can you think this is even OK? All the people potentially contaminated. Angry...

Oh no, yes I am emetophobic too. YANBU, people who are careless about contagious viruses give me the rage. For what it's worth and from one phobic to another, I know you are on countdown but try to remember this:

Rotavirus in children doesn't necessarily affect adults the same way

To catch a bug you would have to INGEST some vomit droplets (sorry), as in swallow the virus - so unless you ate your lunch off the bathroom floor before you cleaned it, licked the carpet or chewed the bedding, or ate food without washing your hands since leaving the house, it's highly unlikely that you have picked it up

A teeny tiny bit of virus has to first surpass your immune system for you to develop symptoms

In any case, how do you know they all didn't eat something iffy?

Is that really the only way a sickness bug gets passed around Billy?

Report
Tinselmouse · 16/03/2016 20:40

Tes it is Sister - Billy is right. The majority of sick bugs (inclyding norovirus) are only contagious when you ingest particles. This is via either being near someone who is being sick (particles briefly airborne and you can breathe them in/swallow them Shock or from not washjng your hands thoroughly after touching a contaminated surface. Most often passed on by the latter because most people do wash wash their hands well enough or often enough

I was like this until I had cancer. I was sick so often on chemo that it cured me of the fear of being sick! I don't recommend this cure

I'm not medically trained, but in 40 years of being phobic I've done a lot of research on such things - and I've known a doctor and 2 microbiologists who all assured me that whilst certain stomach bugs are VERY contagious - like norovirus, which can live on hard surfaces with no host for up to 72hrs - you don't catch them by inhaling germs into your lungs (that's for respiratory illnesses). So, you couldn't catch it by standing next to someone on the train who had been ill in the last 48 hrs, for example, but you might if you shared their cup or snogged their face off (but I did that once, unknowing, and I was alright!!)

Stomach viruses are spread by poor hand hygiene basically - someone vomits or has diarrhoea and doesn't wash their hands, spreading it to door handles etc. You use the door handle, eat your sandwich, in goes the virus.

I manage my phobia through rigorous hand hygiene!!!! Most hand gels don't kill viruses like noro btw, only bacteria - I buy a special foam which zaps everything 😊

Hmm...they weren't to know you had Emetophobia.

It is common courtesy to tell someone if that kind of bug is about - so you could make an informed decision to use extra bleach, use gloves, or leave and not do the job.

So YANBU, mainly, you weren't able to communicate your issue as you weren't told.

Cross post Tinsel - yes I forgot the revolting reality of being near a vomiting person and ingesting droplets temporarily airborne... Mind blown

Sorry to hear that Sugar...but glad you shook off the phobia as well as the cancer Flowers

For reassurance purposes, you are probably fine as as a cleaner you were probably using lots of water, soap, cleaning products, and not putting your fingers in your mouth on the job, because you just wouldn't would you! Does that help at all? Not trying to diminish your indignation, but your angst - presumably you get on with it in a way that doesn't actually promote contamination?

Yes the number of people who take their kids out when they are in the 48h off school, to places with kids, food etc

I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't be so inconsiderate,or at least I would like to think that.

Three of my kids are incredibly poorly right now and ive cancelled the cleaning people coming as I don't want to risk them being around it.

YADNBU, so inconsiderate.
