To not "get" the fascination over Lena Dunham?

I know to many people she represents a lot of things but I can't help but want to throw her in the shower when I see her.

Why? Because she isn't as 'groomed' as other 'celebs'?

Yes your post does rather show why you might not 'get' her....

Irritates the shit out me. Tries to come across at 'different' but is just as attention seeking as half the celebs out there.

Are you referring to her work, OP, or the image of her you see portrayed in the media?

If you experience the work she's done it might help your "get" her.

Benedict Cumberbatch has a similar problem--people don't 'get' why he's so famous and then they see Sherlock or Imitation Game and realise the sheer scope of his talent.

I don't like her work and think she is as attention hungry as all other celebs.

I am not a fan, but don't hate her either. Feel very 'meh' about her really

I watched girls season 1 and 2 but then it just got to the point where I was like - you're just doing this to make a statement, but I don't think it really matters what the statement actually is...

I like that as a very young woman she's been hugely successful in TV without being pretty, polished and thin, which is generally a prerequisite. She's done it through, talent, innovation and hard work.

Girls is remarkable - the writing is amazing. She is also fantastic as an actress in it - it's her brainchild and she is totally fearless in her character and the boundaries she pushes regarding someone who is not stick thin or traditionally beautiful having the audacity to get naked and have on screen sex.

She's very talented OP. That's it. And the media has issue with talented women who don't adhere to today's standards of beauty.

Leviticus, and money and serious connections, like the entire cast of Girls.

I don't 'get' Girls either OP...not just you...

I 'get' her, I just don't enjoy her work, she's very overrated. She's very 'I'm an individual - just like everyone else'. Not being skinny or 'traditionally beautiful' does not make you a genius in our time. However, like with most things in this world, she's very easy to avoid, so doesn't bother me.

I dont get this thread, has she done something recently?

I've watched girls and im not sure why I did. The only mildly interesting bit is when she got a job in advertorials.

Last I heard of her she went crazy on twitter after that story about pebbles and her sister she decided to publish.

Yes, this. Though I've never in fact seen 'Girls', I like that she's very much not off the twinkle-toothed starlet production line.

I don't think thats the case at all. Shes done it mainly through connections. Like lilly allen or deliciously ella.

Love her.

She's smart, funny and relatable. And Girls is fantastic.

Why do you want to throw her in the shower? Because she's a bit chubby with short hair and doesn't look like a typical Hollywood actress? Hmm.

She is seriously connected through her parents who are artists and filmmakers and who are extremely rich. She may be different from some of the beauty queen celebs but she stil got where she is through connections.

Agree Capricorn76, shes a product of nepotism.

She annoys me too with all this 'voice of a generation' bollocks and it's not because I'm jealous or because she's not Hollywood perfect. It's because she's an attention seeking champagne socialist. Girls doesn't represent at least 99% of young women and I'm sick of rich trust funders using connections to take up every area of the media pretending they are 'average Joe's' and preventing more diverse (class and cultural) voices from getting airtime.

And yes I did get out of the wrong side of bed this morning! Happy Wednesday.

Is there a 'fascination'? 'Girls' ratings bombed and it's been cancelled. It never really caught the zeitgeist but was a niche navel gazing exercise for a rather self absorbed and self obsessed strata of society who are of little interest to anybody apart from themselves.

Personally I always found Dunham a rather bland, one dimensional representation of what the American left (and in particular the U.S. left wing media) thinks a young woman should be and in that sense was deeply conformist and unoriginal. She's just dull, a caricature of a type she has slavishly moulded herself too. Nothing groundbreaking or particularly interesting about her.

oh right ... so anybody with connections gets a golden ticket, nothing to do with talent and originality? They could a pile of horse shit and get a tv pilot because of their surname.

Girls hasn't been cancelled Bill. Series 6 started a few weeks ago on Sky and it's excellent.

It's been cancelled:

variety.com/2016/tv/news/girls-ending-cancelled-season-6-hbo-lena-dunham-1201672793/

Lots of the normal BS about being the right time to end etc, but it's not being renewed after a terrible run of ratings.

I think it will end at s6 and s5 is airing atm.
