I hate my SIL she is totally batshit crazy but until i came on here I did not realise how common it was. There seems to be at least three SIL threads a day. What has happened to trigger to rise of the batshit Sister in law grin

I have two bonkers SIL

Thankfully one is almost no more as I approach divorce. We are just poles apart tho she deserves a medal for putting up with BIL.

My DB other half is also plain bonkers, especially with a drink indie her. But she means no harm.

I on the other hand am an excellent SIL exhibit. grin

I think sils tend to feel like an alternative 'version' of us iyswim, as they tend to be similar in age and/or have children of similar ages to our own so we compare each other and if their values and behaviour differ radically from our own, it feels more personal somehow and you are also as family often forced to hear about them and associate with them. I do wonder how I'm viewed as a sil!! I have one who I relate to and one who I don't relate to at all and her behaviour does annoy me more than anyone else's behaviour.

Also, given that I've had two batshit SILs with only one brother, I just have to conclude that he has fucking awful taste in women.

GiddyOnZackHunt Mon 14-Mar-16 23:45:39

I've had 2 batshit SILs (one from DH and one from db) but db has finally succeeded in finding a funny, pleasantly mad woman who likes him and us shock. She isn't yet SIL proper but I know a secret grin

There's always been crazy SILs on MN. Reality's SIL was the stuff of legends. In fact, you could probably use "Reality's SIL" to try to convince people you're not a troll, instead of "river of sweet corn" or "hamwich".

SanityClause Mon 14-Mar-16 23:54:01

Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply that you are a troll, Dollymixture. blush

All female inlaws are weirdos. Except us lot

I have two SILs and they couldn't be more different. One is more fun and one can sometimes be slightly overbearing but all in all they're lovely. Which must mean that I'm the nightmare SIL...

OneTiredMama Tue 15-Mar-16 00:45:56

I have two SIL's. The first I've posted about previously, she is crazy and I still can't trust her. The second is lovely, she can rub others up the wrong way but has always been very genuine which puts me at ease. I don't see her that much though so maybe that's why we get on so well!
I'm a bloody fantastic SIL grin but think I'd be the MIL from hell.

I have one SIL. She's a selfish spoiled child in the body of a 40-odd year old and only sees the world in terms of how other people's issues affect her. She would likely say I'm a bitch because I call her on things that the rest of the family wont!
Probably loads on here as people think 'thank fuck I'm not alone, thought my SIL was a one-off' grin

I don't have a batshit SIL but I do have a batshit SiS, lord help her in laws should anyone be fool enough to marry her (again) - it's funny because I remember thinking as a kid that none of my grandparents sons/daughters in law were well liked - both of my Mums brothers wives were insane in different ways. My Dad and one of my Aunts husbands were truly hated by our grandparents - and I often wondered why it was that those who had married in were always considered outsiders, as a result one of my cousins insisted on having our uncle referred to as her Aunts husband. confused Families.

I have a bat shit crazy mil and sil. Batshit sil is dbros wife. Mils daughter, dhs sister is fantastic.

Both our oldest are a few weeks apart in age. We have never competed, she is bloody great. We are going out with her and her husband for my birthday and I can't wait. Wish they lived closer.

Dbros wife was fine until they got engaged then all hell broke loose. She even had a go at my mum for offering to chip in for the wedding. Just once offered to help out. Apparently that was over stepping boundaries and stepping on her mums toes.

She is super competitive not she has kids (both younger than my two) if my kids are sick, hers are sicker. My kids took up a sport so she sent her son to another sport then told everyone how shit my kids were at their sport and she felt bad as her two year old was a football genius. She cries off sick for every event for my family. At mums 60th birthday party she was so ill that dbro couldn't leave her and bring the kids. At my sons birthday party she was so ill she sent her kids with my mum and insisted dbro stayed with her. Mum and dad weren't amused when they dropped the kids off and her parents were there looking after her as well. 3 adults looking after her while she had cold.

She tried to ban me and mum from spending any time together at all unless she was there. If we invited her and she couldn't come, she expected us to not go as well. Mum didn't take any of that shit either.

She told me that her kids wee more important in the family as dbro was the 'first born' in our family and their kids are always more important.

The problem is I couldn't give a shit. Events are easier if she isn't there. I love her kids and love it when they are there. One Christmas she told me I was evil for working while being a mum and that she hated working mums. I laughed at her. The more I don't care and don't react the more ridiculous she gets.

Ignoring and moving on is far better.

I divorced my crazy ILs together with my ExH - but MIL really won over SIL any day. SIL was a spoiled housewife who had no idea how much stuff actually costs and hence kept asking for insanely expensive stuff, but apart from that she was lovely. MIL probably meant well but was way too invested in my weight, wardrobe and especially my sex life. Truly cringeworthy moments ensued. I actually faked an infectious disease once in order to get out of spending a week at theirs.

CigarsofthePharoahs Tue 15-Mar-16 06:30:06

I only have one SIL who is lovely.
I do however have 4 BILS who do come under the heading "batshit crazy" and I could fill a book with their weirdness. Thankfully DH is well aware of how awful they are and is no longer in contact with any of them.

ftmsoon Tue 15-Mar-16 06:39:11

I have 5 SILs! They are all fairly normal, I get on with one better than the rest. Does that mean I'm the bat shit crazy SIL?? grin

WalkerBait Tue 15-Mar-16 06:45:00

I am the batshit crazy sil. I'm not horrible just a little crazy grin

Crazycatladynumber2 Tue 15-Mar-16 06:59:59

I love my brothers wife dearly. She is the sister I never had. She let me cry all over her new coat when my dad died. I hardly see her though because she works so hard.
The two sil's on my husbands side are disgusting excuses for human beings. They are spiteful and nasty and even my pil's don't like either of them. Thankfully we never see them or have any contact with them.

WipsGlitter Tue 15-Mar-16 07:07:12

I have one SIL (married to DPs sister) we are united in our amusement at our spouses family's madness.

BiL can be a piece of work though!

NoPowerInTheVerseCanStopMe Tue 15-Mar-16 07:12:01

I used to think my SIL was crazy but she's grown up a lot over the last few years and we get on really well now. Of course, she may well see me as a batshit SIL...

shinynewusername Tue 15-Mar-16 07:12:32

Mine is batshit crazy (any examples would instantly out me as she is so far gone ...) but also lovely, so it could be worse smile

HoneyBooBooChild Tue 15-Mar-16 07:14:19

Dolly another one here with a crazy SIL! MIL can be sweet when on her own but is very much under the thumb of SIL - together they are like dumb and dumber, SIL would tell you the sky is green and MIL would sit there nodding along. I have recently gone NC and it is REFRESHING. SIL was always trying to compete with me and quite frankly I couldn't care less hmm

Inertia Tue 15-Mar-16 07:17:30

I have 7 SILS. Only one is a bit lairy, and we see her infrequently. The rest are great. Perhaps there's a law of inverse proportionality between number of SILS and batshittery?

miwelaisjacydo Tue 15-Mar-16 07:19:04

I have a nutty SIL too. She is just a tad mean at times for example on wedding day she told me she didn't like my dress. I now have strategies to ignore her.
