To sit on a table for 4 in the cafe (lighthearted).

Just a lighthearted thread.
I do love a good cafe thread and other than the shouting cafe owner there hasn't been one lately.

Most weeks I go to Debenhams and have coffee and a cake.
I go alone whilst dd does her hobby.
I just enjoy the chill time and mug my face with cake in relative peace.

Yesterday I spied an empty table by the window.
The last few weeks I've sat at the other side on a small table for two and felt a bit cramped up.
However yesterday a lot of the empty tables had dirty dishes on them.

So I sat on a table for 4!!!!

It was a clean table with a good view!

Even though every customer could sit down I know someone somewhere will be thinking iabu.

So come on let me have it.

CrohnicallyAspie Sun 13-Mar-16 08:24:13

Next time, smile and wave enthusiastically at everyone who comes in, asking if they'd like to sit with you.

No one will, but you offered so you are exempt from other customers tutting, judging and thinking YABU.

emilybrontescorset Sun 13-Mar-16 08:27:05

I'm building up to the tables for 4 with comfy sofa seats.

The one next to mine was occupied my a woman and child.

How very dare they.

I don't think Yabu. But personally I would have cleared or piled up the pots on a smaller table.

Only because I don't sitting with other people, had they have asked to sit there I wouldn't have said no.

Next time lie star shaped across it. wink grin

DropYourSword Sun 13-Mar-16 08:30:32

YABU for using 'lighthearted' in the title!

And did you clean up after yourself?

OneEpisode Sun 13-Mar-16 08:31:42

You are only unreasonable if you invest in draping your belongings over the empty chairs & staging the table with extra coffee cups "for your dd".

BlueMoonRising Sun 13-Mar-16 08:32:01

Personally I'd sit on a chair.

But each to their own.

emilybrontescorset Sun 13-Mar-16 08:36:07

I didn't clear away, nobody does. There isn't anywhere to put dirty dishes ( apart from on other tables).

Hence the high volume of dirty tables.

One episode-I like your idea. Next time I may ask for extra cups to put in the other places.
Better still I might borrow a couple of teddy bears from the children's section and arrange them around my table. I bet nobody would dare come and sit next to me then.

BlueMoonRising Sun 13-Mar-16 08:39:49

Hahaha :D or even better, get some of those lifelike baby dolls and maybe a blow up man (the kind people put in the passenger seat, not the sex toy kind) and have a family outing..

SoupDragon Sun 13-Mar-16 08:59:40

You are an evil, evil woman who will go straight to hell.

Having said that, I have no qualms about nabbing one of the big sofa spots if it's free...

OneEpisode Sun 13-Mar-16 09:00:05

In the '80s talking to yourself worked. Maybe in 2016 you could prepare a 360 degree photo on your smart phone for the same effect?

leelu66 Sun 13-Mar-16 09:02:15

YANBU, because I'm sure you would have moved for a group of 4 with nowhere to sit.

If anyone complained, I would just say I'm waiting for friends. Sometimes you have to be bad to feel good. That sounds like a tagline for a porno, sorry.

Lurkedforever1 Sun 13-Mar-16 09:09:25

It's only ok if you down your coffee like aftershock the second a parent with kids comes in while simultaneously cramming the entire cake in your mouth, just incase they want to sit there. Even if there are 20 other 4 seater tables empty, because they might prefer yours. For all you know they might not have even been able to park in a p&c space, so they are entitled to the first choice of tables for their dc to smear food over. Please be more considerate of the extreme hardships of taking dc to a cafe grin

ScarlettDarling Sun 13-Mar-16 09:13:05

I much prefer a table for four...hate those little diddy tables for 2. Yanbu!

Monstertrucker Sun 13-Mar-16 09:24:58

The other week I put my sports equipment on a 4 armchair table in Starbucks and then got a drink and cake for myself. I'm sure I am truely hated 😆😆😆

In a Starbucks?! shock they never have enough tables. Debenhams, yes. Starbucks, no. YABU

Monstertrucker Sun 13-Mar-16 09:42:00

I'm abroad - the one I go to is never busy 😊

OneEpisode Sun 13-Mar-16 09:44:58

But you could make it look busy using spare coffee cups, teddy bears, and life like dolls and sports equipment, so people would be forced to engage with each other?

ctjoy103 Sun 13-Mar-16 09:50:35

Yanbu I do this too. Just leave my coat on one chair, leave my bag on the other with a saucer or the table sugar /salt in front and I sit on the third. It looks like the table is busy and occupied. I hate siting with other people and would just say sorry there's someone using that seat. It always works.

OneEpisode Sun 13-Mar-16 10:10:39

Oh no! There is a risk of becoming serious?
If someone is committed to not sharing I think choosing a smallish table would be more reasonable. So a table for two in this example. Unless you are going to make a contribution to the joy of all, eg with the teddy bear picnic scenario...

OneEpisode Sun 13-Mar-16 10:13:56

Or choosing a larger table but realising we might have to down grade mid-cake for the needs of others (for instance by sharing)...
Sharing the table not the cake.

BadLad Sun 13-Mar-16 10:15:54

You're being unreasonable to sit on the tables.

BadLad Sun 13-Mar-16 10:18:09

Bah! Beaten by bloody BlueMoonRising. Bugger.

Foginthehills Sun 13-Mar-16 10:42:41

YANBU at all! People on their own are usually given a raw deal everywhere, so if the table was free, you had as much right as anyone else to sit there.
