I'm babysitting for a good friend's little boy. Whenever I have her to babysit for my kids I always leave a few snacks out - nothing fancy but maybe a packet of crisps or some fruit, crackers, chocolate... anything really...

She has left me the teabags and that's it. I could rummage in the cupboards (actually I already have) but it feels a bit cheeky to just help myself when nothing has been said.

It's my Friday night after all!

I used to bake shortbread if I couldn't find any biscuits when I was a teenager.
Go rummage. That's part of babysitting.

Blimey that's bad!
I throw in a takeaway and snacks for my babysitters, to leave just tea is poor imo, particularly as I hate tea grin
I bet wherever she has gone, she'll be enjoying something nicer than a cup of tea grin

Go in her cupboards. Fuck it.

Text her and say "I've got the munchies can I rummage for biccies?" Maybe she just forgot.

Maryann1975 Fri 11-Mar-16 21:40:40

I would have a look in the cupboards (I normally have quite a good eye for which would be the biscuit store) and help myself. No way would I sit hungry while babysitting and if she is a good friend she wouldn't mind anyway.
Although I did have the teenager from next door to babysit once, she thought it was really rude to use the tea bags and snacks I had left out and made ever mum bring her supplies round. Her mum and I had a laugh the next day as having both been teenage babysitters we remembered eating everything we were left out!

peckishbabysitter Fri 11-Mar-16 21:41:02

She probably did just forget and I probably could rummage with impunity it just feels a bit wrong. Might drink her wine instead.

I am far too lazy to bake arethereanyleft but I like your teenage self's

peckishbabysitter Fri 11-Mar-16 22:02:51

I looked and found nothing of interest whatsoever. I think she must be on a diet.

If they are like my kids - she's hidden them and meant to get them out!!

passmethewineplease Fri 11-Mar-16 22:10:28

Maybe she just assumed you'd help yourself? good friends do that don't they? Or are my friends just cheeky gits?! grin

That's one of the perks of babysitting, nice biscuits. I always buy nice biscuits for my babysitters.

I used to babysit for a couple who left me all manner of tasty little Indian tidbits - samosas and pakora and ... am I helping any? grin

emsyj Fri 11-Mar-16 22:18:53

Everyone I've ever babysat for has asked me what I would like as a snack! I always ask for crisps and always get them. I would call out for a pizza...

Paulat2112 Fri 11-Mar-16 22:19:42

I babysit for a woman (she does pay me though) and she always tells me to help myself to whatever I like. Generally I never do but sometimes I will have a can of juice. But I usually take my own snacks lol 😁

Have a look on top of the kitchen cupboards, that's where I hide chocolate.

Or on top of the wardrobes in her bedroom, that's where I hide easter eggs! (amongst other things grin)

I've always gone by the unwritten rule that if someone hasn't left me a snack when I'm doing a lengthy favour in their home, their cupboards are fair game.

The first time I dogsat for DB, he left nothing out. I had DD with me. I was there from 4 PM and he wasn't due back until 2 AM. I fed DD a proper meal and nicked helped myself to his double chocolate cookies after I'd put DD to bed. He didn't make the same mistake twice grin

I used to make a tray for mine because I had a family that did this for me when i babysat( which was about three times a week.) The first time I was really chuffed because I never liked to go in people's cupboards or fridge. They left me really lovely biccies because they had four boys and they were a little bit naughty. They had run out of babysitters when a friend from school asked me to do it instead of her because she hated it. I had three sisters so it was no problem to me and I became there babysitter for years till I left the area. They were business people always going out and paid me lots. They couldn't believe their luck( dad told me they had about 20 before me) and i couldn't because I was well paid as well as better snacks than I got at home. So I always made nice snacks for my babysitters. I would text her and say you have the munchies. If she hasn't anything she might bring you something home.

I did a lot of babysitting when I was a memorable evening I arrived at a neighbour's house to babysit her two children. As she was leaving she said 'I've left the ironing basket out for you as you'll be bored when the kids go to bed'

AyeAmarok Fri 11-Mar-16 22:31:14

It's part of the deal that you get to rummage for snacks when babysitting.

She'd probably be mortified to think you thought you weren't allowed to, she probably assumed you'd just know the rules!

dontcallmethatyoucunt Fri 11-Mar-16 22:32:29

Oh shit I a crap babysitter host. We don't have snacks and crap in the house really, it's just not what we do. .. I do tip well though!

Madam the ironing was still there for her when she got back. Sweetly told her that is been doing homework, despite not having any books with me grin

peckishbabysitter Fri 11-Mar-16 22:35:57

No I just checked again - no biscuits, crisps, cake or even fruit apparently available. Wine it is then.

peckishbabysitter Fri 11-Mar-16 22:37:11

If I had been left ironing I think I would have already texted to say her son couldn't settle!
